Excerpt from Short History of German Literature If we turn back two hundred years, we find the reading men of England, if they have time to go beyond their own authors, giving their attention, among moderns, to the Italians and Spanish. As yet in Europe only Italy and Spain, besides England, had seen the rise of literatures of sufficient moment to influence the cultivated world beyond the national limits. Dante, Petrarch, Boceaceio, Ariosto, Tasso, Machiavelli had lived, and these are still the greatest Italian names. In Spain, Cervantes, Lope de Vega, and Calderon had done their work, - work which no succeeding writers of that land have equalled. If we go back one hundred years, the literature of France has taken the place in the estimation of the English once held by the writers of Spain and Italy; the brilliant men of the age of Louis XIV have laid the world under their spell. In our time, again, the influence of France has been, to a large extent, supplanted. Excerpt from A History of German Literature IN writing this volume, it was my task to compress more than a thousand years of literary history into a volume of about four hundred pages. The book was not to be a collection of sheaths garnered here and there in favourite fields, but a real history, dealing with the whole subject coherently and with due regard to the relative importance of periods, writers, and writings. As it was evident that I should be obliged to omit freely and boldly, I decided, first of all, to omit the scholars, philosophers, and men of science, that is, to confine myself pretty closely to literature in the restricted English sense of the word. The broader conception of literature is no doubt the more philosophic, but it is less convenient for a writer who must economise space at every step. The German genius has done much of its best work in scholarship, philosophy, and science, but I was not writing a history of the German genius. Excerpt from History of German Literature: Based on the German Work of Vilmar The work on which the following pages are based has reached a sixth edition within a short period of time, and enjoys a high reputation in Germany. That portion which treats of the Heroic Sagas is considered superior to anything that has been written on the subject. Its author, Vilmar, held an office in the Department of Public Worship and Education, under the notorious Hessian minister, Hassenpflug. According to the German papers, he belongs to that party in Germany which stands up for the national Lutheranism as opposed to the foreign Calvinism. These views, which Vilmar advocated with great vigour, excited odium in some quarters; and on the disgrace and downfall of Hassenpflug, Vilmar's retirement was greeted with loud jubilee by the democrats, who stigmatised him as a tyrant and represser of national liberty. Since then, he has been Professor of Theology at Marburg. In many respects, Vilmar's work (which, it is only fair to say, exhibits no leaning towards despotism, civil or ecclesiastical) surpasses those of his predecessors on the same subject. Excerpt from History of German Literature The plan in preparing this work has been to produce an elementary work for those who desire to inform themselves in regard to the great men and the important works of German literature. I have endeavored briefly to show how important epochs have developed, to furnish short biographies of the leaders connected with these epochs, and to present concise outlines of their important works. For the convenience of those unfamiliar with German, I have endeavored to reproduce a large number of titles in English. A large portion of the book, printed eight years ago, and since used as a text-book in eight consecutive college classes, has demonstrated its usefulness in my own work; and in the hope that it may do similar service for others, I have revised and completed it.
