Excerpt from Shakespeare's Tragedy of Macbeth In the notes I have been under special obligations to Mr. Horace Howard Furness, who has kindly allowed me to make free use of his New Variorum edition of the play (philadelphia, in which much of my work was already done to my hand, and who has given me other help which I could hardly have got elsewhere. My indebted ness to him is acknowledged on almost every page, but I do not know how to state it in full. I have intended to give credit in all cases for matter drawn from other editions, especially the more recent ones, like J. Hunter's (london, the Clarendon Press edition (oxford, and Moberly's (london, A great part of my material was accumulated before these edi tions appeared. And included many things that are also to be found in them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Shakespeare's Tragedy of Macbeth: With Introduction, and Notes Explanatory and Critical; For Use in Schools and Classes Ibis highly probable, to say the least, that the tragedy was then fresh from the Poet's hand, and. Was in its first course of performance. Some arguments, indeed, or seeming argu ments, have been adduced, inferring the play to have been written three or four years earlier but I can see no great force in them. On the other hand, it appears that' Forman had long been an habitual frequenter of play-houses and it seems nowise likely that one so eager in quest of novelties would either have missed the play, had it been put upon the stage before, or have made so special a notice of it, but that he then saw it for the first time. Nor have the characteristics of the work itself any thing to say against the date in ques tion 3 those portions of it that have the clearest and most unquestionable impress of Shakespeare's hand being in his greatest, richest, most idiomatic style. Book Description
Excerpt from Shakespeare's Tragedy of Macbeth: Edited for School Use It is for the second of these steps that the footnotes have been added. It is often hard for the teacher who has read widely, and who has an intimate acquaintance with some of Shakespeare's works, to realize the meager equipment of the average student when he is called upon to study a masterpiece of Elizabethan literature. Shake speare's language is full of dark places to one who knows little save the spoken vocabulary of every-day life. Many lines and even passages of the author are well-nigh unin telligible even to the most experienced editors; manifestly, then, unless care is taken, the average student will conclude that the work is another lifeless grinding of something hard to understand, and therefore devoid of anything that will bring entertainment or pleasure. Book Description
Excerpt from The Tragedy of Macbeth In the warwick shakespeare an attempt is made to present the greater plays of the dramatist in their literary aspect, and not merely as material for the study of philology or grammar. Criticism purely verbal and textual has only been included to such an extent as may serve to help the student in his appreciation of the essential poetry. Questions of date and literary history have been fully dealt with in the Introductions, but the larger space has been devoted to the interpretative rather than the matter-offact order of scholar ship. Aesthetic judgments are never final, but the Editors have attempted to suggest points of view from which the analysis of dramatic motive and dramatic character may be profitably undertaken. In the Notes likewise, while it is hoped that all unfamiliar expressions and allusions have been adequately explained, yet it has been thought even more important to consider the dramatic value of each scene, and the part which it plays in relation to the whole. These general principles are common to the whole series; in detail each Editor is alone responsible for the plays intrusted to him. Every volume of the series has been provided with a Glossary, an Essay upon Metre, and an Index; and Appen dices have been added upon points of special interest, which could not conveniently be treated in the Introduction or the Notes. The text is based by the several Editors on that of the Glade edition: the only omissions made are those that are unavoidable in an edition likely to be used by young students. Book Description
Excerpt from Shakespeare's Tragedy of Macbeth: Edited With an Introduction, Notes, and Analytic Questions Accordingly, respecting the outline analyses appended to this edition, it is not believed that any argument or apology is necessary. The general use of the author's Shakespeare Questions, in another form, throughout the country, and the demand for text-books that shall along with the usual notes and other helps include them, seem sufficient justification for this feature. They have been used, much in the shape here given, in the classes of the author for a dozen years or more, and differ from the questions often found in school-books mainly in asking nothing that can be found literally in the text or else where, and in involving discussion of principal points. Teachers who have no interest in the artistic construo tion of the play, or in its ethic meaning, will easily leave them aside as they pursue their own modes of administer ing Shakespeare's educational power. The Questions are in part inductive, in part Socratic, and in part merely present the given difficulty in an analyzed and logical form, that the pupil may go at work upon something definite and tangible. Book Description
Excerpt from Shakespeare's Tragedy of Macbeth: Edited With an Introduction and Notes This human sympathy with the sufferings of the tragic victim does not imply any approval of the error in conduct or flaw of character from which the tragic result inevitably follows. On the contrary, our sense of justice often imperiously demands in the dénouement a portrayal of the avoidless retribution, the sight of which yet stirs our intensest pity.
