I thus retained the anonymity of my informants, as suggested by the American Anthropological Association's statements on ethical issues (1971).5 I was aware that the results of the research might border on the pornographic due to the nature of the topic and that I might also create negative impressions of the young residents of Mafalala barrio. [...] The Department of Epidemiology in the Ministry of Health (MoH) took responsibility for investigating the origin and spread of the disease in the country. [...] The barrio itself is bounded by the market of Adelina to the North, Marion Ngoabi Avenue to the South, Acordos de Lusaka Avenue to the West, and Angola Ave- nue to the East. [...] The South-eastern area of the barrio is well served by infrastructure: there is easy access to the city, including the downtown areas, the commercial services centre and the industrial areas. [...] Because of this gap, I suggest that HIV/AIDS educational programmes need to use the language of the family and work together with elders to capture their attention and to help to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS virus in Mozambique.

Book Description
How does one address homophobia without threatening majority rule democracy and freedoms of speech and faith? How does one "Africanize" sexuality research, empirically and theoretically, in an environment that is not necessarily welcoming to African scholars? In Sexual Diversity in Africa, contributors critically engage with current debates about sexuality and gender identity, as well as with contentious issues relating to methodology, epistemology, ethics, and pedagogy. They present a tapestry of issues that testify to the complex nature of sexuality, sexual practices, and gender performance in Africa. Essays examine topics such as the well-established same-sex networks in Accra and Bamako, African "traditions" defined by European observers, and the bizarre mix of faith, pharmaceuticals, and pseudo-science used to "cure" homosexual men. Their evidence also demonstrates the indefensibility of over-simplified constructions of homosexuality versus heterosexuality, modern versus traditional, Africa versus the West, and progress from the African closet towards Western models of out politics, all of which have tainted research on same-sex practices and scientific studies of HIV/AIDS. Asserting that the study of sexuality is intellectually and politically sustainable in Africa, Sexual Diversity in Africa contributes to the theorization of sexualities by presenting a more sensitive and knowledgeable study of African experiences and perspectives. Contributors include Olajide Akanji, Christophe Broqua, Cheryl Cooky, Serena Owusua Dankwa, Shari L. Dworkin, Marc Epprecht, Melissa Hackman, Notisha Massaquoi, Crystal Munthree, Kathleen O’Mara, Stella Nyanzi, S.N.Nyeck, Vasu Reddy, Amanda Lock Swarr, and Lisa Wiebesiek.

Book Description
While cities often act as the engines of economic growth for developing countries, they are also frequently the site of growing violence, poverty, and inequality. Yet, social theory, largely developed and tested in the Global North, is often inadequate in tackling the realities of life in the dangerous parts of cities in the Global South. Drawing on the findings of an ambitious five-year, 15-project research programme, Social Theories of Urban Violence in the Global South offers a uniquely Southern perspective on the violence–poverty–inequalities dynamics in cities of the Global South. Through their research, urban violence experts based in low- and middle-income countries demonstrate how "urban violence" means different things to different people in different places. While some researchers adopt or adapt existing theoretical and conceptual frameworks, others develop and test new theories, each interpreting and operationalizing the concept of urban violence in the particular context in which they work. In particular, the book highlights the links between urban violence, poverty, and inequalities based on income, class, gender, and other social cleavages. Providing important new perspectives from the Global South, this book will be of interest to policymakers, academics, and students with an interest in violence and exclusion in the cities of developing countries.

Book Description
This discussion paper is based on a comprehensive report on the Mozambican legal system entitled Mozambique: Justice Sector and the Rule of Law (the main report). The main report is the product of a year-long, questionnaire-based research project that solicited views and information from judicial and government officials, civil society actors, academics, politicians, ordinary citizens and donors. It is one of a series of reports on Mozambique to be produced by the Africa Governance, Monitoring and Advocacy Project (AfriMAP), a project of the Open Society Foundation (OSF), and the Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa (OSISA). AfriMAP is also producing reports in South Africa, Malawi, Ghana and Senegal. The idea behind is to conduct audit of African governments' compliance with African and international standards on human rights and good governance, including the commitments made in national constitutions. The reports are intended to be a resource for practitioners and human rights activists in the countries concerned, and for those working in other African countries, to improve respect for human rights and democratic values on the continent.
