Book Description
It is very common in the traditional community in Indonesia that women sometimes act as real women. This is based on the root word of women, empu, meaning as individuals who are to be honoured greatly. In this case the role of women are very central. I found that this philosophical means of women has on Naniek Widayati. She does not appear as a genuine woman only, nor as a person who does ordinary works. Even though she grew up as a daughter of a Batik entrepreneur in Laweyan, Surakarta, her characteristics were not merely influenced by those environmental. It has been proved by completing her doctoral dissertation recently. Through her sensitivity in art, culture, and space that she obtained when she was studying architecture, and from the point of view of archaeology, Naniek was able to define the environment of Laweyan as an integrated system which is formed by sub-systems, which affected the environment of Laweyan through the artefact and nonartefact and created the town as a district area, which is reflected a great interaction between the environment of social cultural and local ecology. Since I knew her 20 years ago, Naniek grew up as a firm person who never says “give-up” in every situation and I know that this becomes one of her obligations as a Muslim who obeys the doctrine of her religion to study further and further. I am sure that her research and other works will be successfully benefit the Indonesian community now and in the future. Jakarta, 12th, August 2003 Eduard Tjahjadi, Dipl. Ing. Book Description
The word ’batik’ is possibly of Malay origin from the word ’tik’ meaning ’to drip’ or ’to drop.’ The term is applied to a resist dye technique invented independently in locations as diverse as Ancient Egypt, Japan and Turkestan. Batik is a remarkably flexible textile technique and is suited to small-scale methods of production, but demand from the fashion and tourism industries is increasing. This volume brings together the experiences and concerns of the international community of batik producers. It gives voice to their suggestions for ensuring that the producers of this traditional craft are integrated into its increasingly global production rather than excluded from it. Building on the work of batik designers and producers the book discusses the emergence of a global craft consciousness. Batik producers report on innovative measures taken both individually and collectively to hold their market position while commercial producers frequently annex and mass-produce traditional batik design. The book concludes with a discussion of marketing and production innovations and tourism which enable the producers of batik to maintain the integrity of their designs whilst harnessing the benefits of new commercial forms.

Book Description
In the midst of the rapidly evolving industrial era 4.0, the creative economy industry has emerged as a beacon of innovation and imaginative ideas. As consumer preferences change, technology advances, and competition intensifies, the creative industry must continuously adapt its strategies to thrive in both local and global markets. Among the industries worth exploring, the batik industry stands out, as batik represents a significant cultural heritage of Indonesia that demands preservation and protection. Surakarta, renowned for its distinctive batik, holds a prominent place in the study of this industry. Surakarta, a city celebrated for its design-focused culture, has proposed Batik Solo as a design-based creative city to UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization). Within this context, the research focuses on the Laweyan batik industrial area, the birthplace of batik in Surakarta. The level of competition in the national and global batik industry has a direct impact on the industry's growth, necessitating the development of a special strategy to confront these challenges and structure the business effectively. This book aims to uncover the strategic model of the Laweyan batik industry, employing the canvas model approach, to explore the economic potential of the Laweyan Batik industry, propose alternative business strategies, and safeguard the legacy of Kampung Batik Laweyan as a sustainable batik industry icon in Surakarta. By delving into the intricate details of the Laweyan batik industry, this study sheds light on the challenges and opportunities faced by creative industries operating in a rapidly changing landscape. With a comprehensive analysis of the canvas model approach, readers will gain valuable insights into how this model can be employed to devise effective business strategies, enhance competitiveness, and ensure the long-lasting presence of Laweyan Batik as an emblem of Surakarta's rich cultural heritage. This book is an essential resource for researchers, business professionals, policymakers, and enthusiasts interested in understanding the dynamics of the creative industry, with a particular focus on the Laweyan batik industry and its strategic management.

Book Description
A wide-flung archipelago lying between the Pacific and Indian Oceans, Indonesia is the world's most populous Islamic country. For over two thousand years it was a crossroads on the major trading route between China and India, but it was not brought together into a single entity until the Dutch extended their rule throughout the Netherlands East Indies in the early part of the 20th century. Declaring its independence from the Dutch in 1945, the Republic of Indonesia was ruled by only two regimes over the next half century Throughout the years the country has continued to be dogged by an inefficient bureaucracy and by perpetual problems of corruption. However, since 2004 Indonesia has successfully carried out four direct elections for president, together with an equal number of elections for legislative bodies at all levels of government, and has finally in 2014 elected a president with no ties to either the military or to the previous authoritarian power structure. This third edition of Historical Dictionary of Indonesia contains a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 900 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Indonesia.
