Book Description
This progress report is on service tests of fenceposts, untreated or treated with preservative. The earliest test installations were started in 1908, and new tests have been added in succeeding years. The service records cover a wide variety of post species, 12 methods of treatment, and 73 different preservatives or preservative combinations. Actual or estimated life figures are shown for test installations where 10 percent or more of the posts had failed at the time of the last inspection.

Book Description
Service-life tests indicate that ponderosa pine fenceposts treated with preservatives performed well after field exposure of 30 years. Treating plants in the Black Hills area used commercial methods to treat the posts with creosote, pentachlorophenol, and waterborne arsenicals. Test sites were in the northern Great Plains-one in the semiarid western portion near Scenic, South Dakota, the other in the more humid eastern portion near Brookings. The annual service cost of the untreated posts ranged from $1.06 to $1.18 per post depending upon test plot location. The lowest annual cost of the treated posts was $0.85 per post.

Book Description
Untreated and preservative-treated fence posts were exposed in soil at a test site near Corvallis, OR. Several species, including western juniper and Osage-orange, showed exceptional natural durability. Preservative treatment generally extended the useful life of the posts, but the degree of protection varied with the chemical and the application method.
