Book Description
Excerpt from National Duties, and Other Sermons and Addresses The nation and kingdom that will not serve thee shall perish. IN every crisis of public strife, when irreconcilable principles have tried their strength in the open field, the Old Testament has risen into higher favour with religious men; has seemed to become richer, deeper, grander than before and to speak with a. Directness and reality that almost take its antiquity away. The peasants of Germany called their leader the Sword of Gideon, and took Westphalia for their Promised Land. The Huguenots besieged in La Rochelle pondered the story of Sennacherib's host, and prayed the prayer of Hezekiah. If you peep over the shoulder of Cromwell's trooper, reading his Bible in the hay-loft ere he flings B. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Sermons on Bible Subjects, Vol. 3 of 3 Genesis xxxu., 28, 29. And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed. And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there. The complexion of this story is peculiarly Jewish. It contains three points which are especially interesting to every Jew in a national point of view. It explained to him why he was called Israelite. It traces the origin Of his own name, Israelite, to a distant ancestor, who had signally exhibited religious strength, and been, in the language Of those times, a wrestler with God, from whence he had Obtained the name Israel. It casts much deep and curious interest round an otherwise insignificant Village, Peniel, where his transaction had taken place, and which derived its name from it, Peniel, the face of God. And, besides, it explained the origin of a singular custom, which might seem a superstitious one, Of not suffering a particular muscle to be eaten, and regarding it with a kind Of religious awe, as the part in which Jacob was said by tradition to have been injured, by the earnest tension of his frame during this struggle. SO far all is Jewish, narrow, merely of local Interest. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Plain Sermons: By Contributors to the "Tracts for the Times" Others, again, are discontented because they have not those domestic blessings which some of their neighbours enjoy, such as relations, wife, and children, and the like. Yet jesus christ chose to be without all these; by which HE would doubtless show us, that there is nothing of any importance, nothing worth caring about, in all these things. Neither are we the better if we have them, neither are we the worse if we have them not. If we have such comforts, we are to be thankful for them if we have them not, we are quite as much to be thankful that we have them not; for we mav be quite certain, in either case, that we have what is best, when we have what god gives. Book Description
Excerpt from Sermons on Various Subjects Disappointment may be experienced by some that none of the sermons addressed to the young are found in this selection. They are indeed invaluable, but they are so connected that it was difficult to begin without publishing the whole and, since this volume was designed as a general memorial and keepsake for the congregation and friends of Dr. Adams, it seemed important to make it up of such varieties as would be most generally acceptable. Book Description
Excerpt from National Sins: A Fast-Day Sermon; Preached in the Presbyterian Church, Columbia, S. C., Wednesday, November 21, 1860 In conformity with these principles, we recognize Chris tianity to-day as the religion of our Commonwealth. Our standard of right is that eternal law which God proclaimed from Sinai, and which Jesus expounded on the Mount. We recognize our responsibility to Jesus Christ. He is head over all things to the Church, and the nation that will not serve Him is doomed to perish. Before men we are a free and sovereign State; before God we are dependent subjects and one of the most cheering omens of the times is the heartiness with which this truth has been received. We are a Christian people, and a Christian Commonwealth. As on the one hand we are not Jews, Infidels or Turks, so on the other, we are not Presbyterians, Baptists, Episc0pa lians, or Methodists. Christianity, without distinction of sects, is the fountain of our national life. We accept the Bible as the great moral charter by which our laws must be measured and the Incarnate Redeemer as the Judge to whom we are responsible.
