Book Description
"SEM-Pasifika is a set of community-based socioeconomic monitoring guidelines developed specifically for coastal managers in Pacific island countries. Beginning in 2008, several SEM-Pasifika trainings have been carried out across Micronesia. Assessments have taken place in Arno and Jenrok in the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Chuuk and Yap in the Federated States of Micronesia, Palau, and Saipan, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. After coordination among Conservation Society of Pohnpei, the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Micronesia Conservation Trust (MCT) SEM-Pasifika was able to launch the first training in Pohnpei in 2012 ... The Conservation Society of Pohnpei (CSP) and its partnering agencies selected the community of Metipw in Madolenihmw unanimously to be the target field site. At the invitation of the community's chief, the assessment was requested based on concerns from community members regarding their newly established Marine Protected Area (MPA), Nan Wap. Although the Metipw community is active in resource management, there has not been an official assessment addressing how the MPA is impacting the livelihood of those who live in Metipw, what changes have been seen in traditional conservation practices and what changes the community is observing and making regarding climate change. In addition, the site was selected due to a large-scale development (hotel and casino) being proposed for the vicinity of Metipw. The assessment also worked to identify the community's feelings about this development and its potential impact on their resources"--Executive summary.

Book Description
"The initiative to develop these guidelines started in February 2005, following a workshop organized by SPREP and NOAA, which was held to review socioeconomic monitoring efforts already in place in the Pacific. In October 2006, a follow-up meeting was convened, comprising representatives from NOAA, LMMA, SPREP, CRISP, FSPI, GCRMN, and World Fish Center. At this meeting, it was agreed that a set of socioeconomic guidelines for the Pacific should be developed to provide a user-friendly document that synthesizes the existing methods, including Socioeconomic Monitoring Guidelines (SocMon), Locally Marine Managed Area Learning Framework (LMMA-LF, or shortened LF), and Socio-Economic Fisheries Surveys in the Pacific (SFSPI). In May 2007, a workshop was held in Fiji to make final decisions and plans for preparation of the guidelines. In October 2007, the first draft of SEM-Pasifika was launched at the 8th Pacific Islands Conference on Nature Conservation and Protected Areas in Papua New Guinea, followed by an intensive training-of-trainers workshop hosting participants from over 10 countries in the Pacific. The feedback from the workshop participants was used to revise the final guidelines"--P. 5.

Book Description
This book explores how vulnerable and resilient communities from SIDS are affected by climate change; proposes and, where possible, evaluates adaptation activities; identifies factors capable of enhancing or inhibiting SIDS people’s long-term ability to deal with climate change; and critiques the discourses, vocabularies, and constructions around SIDS dealing with climate change. The contributions, written by well-established scholars, as well as emerging authors and practitioners, in the field, include conceptual papers, coherent methodological approaches, and case studies from the communities based in the Caribbean Sea and the Indian, Atlantic, and Pacific Oceans. In their introduction, the editors contextualise the book within the current literature. They emphasise the importance of stronger links between climate change science and policy in SIDS, both to increase effectiveness of policy and also boost scholarly enquiry in the context of whose communities are often excluded by mainstream research. This book is timely and appropriate, given the recent commission by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) of a Special Report that aims at addressing vulnerabilities, “especially in islands and coastal areas, as well as the adaptation and policy development opportunities” following the Paris Agreement. Coupled with this, there is also the need to support the policy community with further scientific evidence on climate change–related issues in SIDS, accompanying the first years of implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Book Description
This 32-chapter volume represents the core of several oral and poster presentations made at the conference. In addition to Introduction and Conclusion sections, the book is thematically divided into 7 sections, namely, 1) Land Use and Farming Systems, 2) Effects of Climate Change on Crop Yield, 3) Soil Nutrient and Water Management for Carbon Sequestration, 4) Rehabilitation of Degraded Lands through Forestry and Agroforestry, 5) Management of Animal Production for Greenhouse Gas Emissions, 6) Smallholder Adaptation to Climate Change, and 7) Economic, Social and Policy Issues. It addresses these themes in the context of sustainable intensification (SI). It implies increasing agronomic production from the existing land while improving/restoring its quality and decreasing the C or environmental footprint. Simply put, SI means producing more from less.

Book Description
In their later years, Americans of different racial and ethnic backgrounds are not in equally good-or equally poor-health. There is wide variation, but on average older Whites are healthier than older Blacks and tend to outlive them. But Whites tend to be in poorer health than Hispanics and Asian Americans. This volume documents the differentials and considers possible explanations. Selection processes play a role: selective migration, for instance, or selective survival to advanced ages. Health differentials originate early in life, possibly even before birth, and are affected by events and experiences throughout the life course. Differences in socioeconomic status, risk behavior, social relations, and health care all play a role. Separate chapters consider the contribution of such factors and the biopsychosocial mechanisms that link them to health. This volume provides the empirical evidence for the research agenda provided in the separate report of the Panel on Race, Ethnicity, and Health in Later Life.

Book Description
On 21-22 April 2010, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) organized a social protection conference in Manila. Interest in social protection has been growing since the global financial crisis heightened awareness of the many millions of people in Asia and the Pacific who live in poverty or vulnerable situations. Thus, policy makers are now keen to develop social protection systems that can assist people to both leave and stay out of poverty. The conference brought together people from ADB, its developing member countries, partner agencies, research institutes, and civil society organizations to exchange valuable experience and information and discuss ideas on how to develop social protection and expand it for the well-being of people in Asia and the Pacific. This book features selected papers from the conference that respond to the need for integrated and inclusive social protection to improve the quality of peoples' lives and livelihoods. Specific areas emphasized are health insurance, pensions, the informal sector, measures targeting children, and measuring and monitoring social protection.
