This book investigates the origins of fundamentalism, outlining its characteristics and the history of key fundamentalist movements around the world, considering examples from Christianity, Islam, Buddhism and Hinduism. The book argues that fundamentalism develops when modern lay religious leaders challenge the authority of secular states and traditional religious establishments. These new leaders and their followers seek to infuse religious values and practices into all spheres, especially law, politics, education and science. The patterns of religious authority and leadership that characterize fundamentalism have their roots in a Christian context but were globalized through intense intercultural contacts after the mid-nineteenth century. Fundamentalism is a thoroughly modern and global phenomenon because it presupposes the globalization of ideas and practices concerning religious leadership and organization, as well as universal changes in the relationship of religion to modern societies and states.

Muslims living within Western civilisation often desire to rediscover their own way of life and synchronise modern knowledge with the teachings of Islam in a holistic manner. This book, for the first time, looks critically at the ideas of Islamisation of prominent scholars and the institutions with which they have been affiliated. It is argued that the proponents of Islamisation have failed to integrate theory, practice, and spirituality. Some scholars use such terms as ‘de-secularisation’, ‘de-westernisation’, and ‘integration’ to mean ‘Islamisation’, although they differ in terms of the process and methodology of the Islamisation of knowledge (IOK) and contain some logical inconsistencies. Most importantly, the IOK movement has undergone several transformations since its inception in 1977 due to both internal and external factors. This study analyses these factors and changes that followed in terms of structures and strategies, and covers key areas and topics of interest to students, academics, and seasoned professionals working on the Islamisation of knowledge. It also explains the problematic relationship between Islamic and Western knowledge, and gives some pointers on how to bring about a change in the world of knowledge.

Promoting Islam as a defender of human rights is laden with difficulties. Advocates of human rights will readily point out numerous humanitarian failures carried out in the name of Islam. In The Rights of God, Irene Oh looks at human rights and Islam as a religious issue rather than a political or legal one and draws on three revered Islamic scholars to offer a broad range of perspectives that challenge our assumptions about the role of religion in human rights. The theoretical shift from the conception of morality based in natural duty and law to one of rights has created tensions that hinder a fruitful exchange between human rights theorists and religious thinkers.
