This statement is made without the slightest desire to cast aspersions upon the excellent work in Latin done in many schools. I am firmly convinced, however, from my own experience and from the testimony of other men, that Latin is poorly taught in the majority of our Southern high schools and preparatory schools. No one who has had charge of Freshman classes needs argument from a fellow-sufferer to prove that this is true. The notes in this volume are, there fore, quite full. The introduction has'been made very brief, because of the well-nigh universal habit among students of skipping that portion of a textbook altogether. Subjects usually treated at length in introductions are here set forth at proper points in the commentary. The selections which appear in this book were made with a view to throwing light upon Cicero's habits and character, and upon the life in which he moved. Although this basis of choice coincides with that adopted by practically all recent editors, yet there are several letters presented here which are not found in the editions in general use at the present time. Excerpt from Selected Letters of Cicero: With Notes for the Use of Schools The text adopted in this selection is that of Baiter and Kayser. In their edition of Cicero's works the letters of Cicero to his friends, and to his brother Quintus, occupy the ninth volume (Leipsic 1866); and those to Atticus and Brutus the tenth volume (1867). There are some passages in these selected letters which Baiter and Kayser, and all critical editors, are obliged to print in a hopelessly corrupt state. But inasmuch as the present edition is intended for the use of school, it seemed desirable to adopt in most cases such conjectural emendations as might enable the passage to bear translation. Beside these graver departures from the text of Baiter, some deviations in spelling have been adopted. The brackets and italics are form Baiter and Kayser, and denote respectively that the words so treated ought probably to be omitted, or inserted. The letters of Cicero appear to have been widely known down to the latest times of the Western Empire, but to have wholly fallen out of knowledge before the middle of the twelfth century. Their rediscovery was reserved for a man who merited such fortune, one of the foremost of the revivers of literature. Excerpt from Cicero Ten Orations and Selected Letters For the last forty years there has been a growing tendency to load the text-book Of a Latin author with matter about the author and his times. The numerous American and foreign editions Of selections from Cicero's orations have undoubtedly been very useful and have reflected much credit upon the dili gence and scholarship Of the editors; but they have all fallen Short Of the ideal text-book as a means for the preparation Of assigned lessons. Some Of them, furnishing an abundance Of bibliographical and other material for the teacher's use, have been admirable from the teacher's standpoint and should be in every Latin teacher's library. Others have had excellent pictorial illustrations but such meager commentary as to leave the student unpiloted amid the rich flow Of Cicero's eloquence.
