Book Description
Excerpt from Seed Stored in Cones of Some Jack Pine Stands, Northern Minnesota In both the 40-year-old and 70 to 80-year stands, the number Of cones produced increased with d.b.b. The limited data available also indicated that within a given stand, cone production increased as crown position increased in dominance. The amount Of viable seed stored in the cones varied from per acre in the 40-year un thinned stand to for thinned timber of this age. Intermediate were 70 to 80-year jack pine with and the plantations with per acre. This is a range of to pounds of germ inable seed, an amount which would be muchcones. But since there were more Older cones on the trees, they contributed almost a third of the viable seed. The lower yield Of viable seeds in Older cones was due in part to the fewer total seeds they contained and in part to the presence Of an appreciable number Of dead seeds, for empty seeds were no more numerous here than in young er cones. Dead seeds were Of no consequence in any Of the other cone lots tested except in one from a 130-year-old tree in which they amounted -to 7 percent. Non-wood Forest Products from Conifers
Author: William M. Ciesla
Publisher: Fao
ISBN:
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 144
Book Description
The objective of this paper is to provide a global review of the non-wood uses of conifers. For the purposes of this paper, conifers are defined as trees and shrubs of the botanical orders Coniferales, Taxales and Ginkgoales (Rushforth 1987). Although some services are briefly mentioned, the focus of this paper is on products which conifers provide species, which are important sources of non-wood forest products, and places where these products are harvested. With the exception of essential oils, which can be obtained from several parts of the tree, the products described are organized by the part of the tree from which they are obtained (e.g. foliage, bark and roots, resin, seeds and cones). Where possible, data on levels of production and international trade are presented. Problems associated with the sustainable management of these products and compatibility or conflicts with other land uses are also presented. Both contemporary and historical or traditional uses of non-wood products from conifers are discussed.

Prudence
Author: David Treuer
Publisher: Penguin
ISBN: 0698157303
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 209
Book Description
A haunting and unforgettable novel about love, loss, race, and desire in World War II–era America. On a sweltering day in August 1942, Frankie Washburn returns to his family’s rustic Minnesota resort for one last visit before he joins the war as a bombardier, headed for the darkened skies over Europe. Awaiting him at the Pines are those he’s about to leave behind: his hovering mother; the distant father to whom he’s been a disappointment; the Indian caretaker who’s been more of a father to him than his own; and Billy, the childhood friend who over the years has become something much more intimate. But before the homecoming can be celebrated, the search for a German soldier, escaped from the POW camp across the river, explodes in a shocking act of violence, with consequences that will reverberate years into the future for all of them and that will shape how each of them makes sense of their lives. With Prudence, Treuer delivers his most ambitious and captivating novel yet. Powerful and wholly original, it’s a story of desire and loss and the search for connection in a riven world; of race and class in a supposedly more innocent era. Most profoundly, it’s about the secrets we choose to keep, the ones we can’t help but tell, and who—and how—we’re allowed to love.
