Assurément, après plusieurs décennies de politiques de modernisation, de nombreuses sociétés musulmanes sont confrontées à une réislamisation et à un néofondamentalisme. L'interprétation de ces phénomènes, au cas par cas, pose question : s'agit-il partout d'un simple retour à un passé idéalisé, ou bien, parfois d'une recherche d'accès à la modernité par d'autres moyens que ceux de l'Occident ? La réponse est loin d'être évidente. Les chapitres de ce livre, parcourant divers pays, régions et communautés, dans une perspective théorique et comparatiste, montrent que les sociétés musulmanes connaissent des transformations sociales profondes ; leurs rapports à la sécularité et à la démocratie sont difficiles, mais sans doute pas impossibles. De cette analyse se dégagent les convergences et divergences qui soulignent bien qu'il est erroné de parler de ces pays au singulier mais qu'il convient de raisonner en termes « des mondes de l'islam » et « des islams ».

C'est ainsi que l'analyse des dynamiques intergénérationnelles en Afrique prend toute son importance afin de rendre compte des changements qui ont cours depuis la moitié du XXe siècle. Ce livre s'inscrit donc dans une tendance récente de la recherche qui montre un regain d'intérêt pour l'étude des générations et de l'intergénérationnel en Afrique. La notion de génération n'est toutefois pas nouvelle dans l'analyse des dynamiques sociales en Afrique, notamment si l'on se réfère à l'écrit fondateur de Karl Mannheim, Le problème des générations (1928), dans lequel il invite à mettre en évidence "tous les changements dus à la dynamique historico-sociale" pour bien cerner les éléments de changements liés au facteur de génération. La perspective adoptée dans ce livre est de voir comment les apports intergénérationnels se modifient, comment la légitimité des aînés peut être rediscutée et comment les jeunes tentent d'échapper aux difficultés et aux contraintes. Ce regard a conduit les auteurs à trouver de nouveaux lieux pour observer les jeunes mais aussi des espaces communs aux différentes générations. Dans cet ouvrage, ils mettent en avant les continuités et les discontinuités des lieux de conflits et de négociations, ainsi que les stratégies de coopération qui marquent les rapports entre les générations. In the past, ideologies and religions had a real impact on the media. In the current era of mass media and communication strategies, perception takes priority over identity and new questions arise: how to introduce faith and religion in a pluralising and detraditionalising world? To what extent can Islam be localized in an increasingly interconnected world?
