Se considera al suelo como sumidero de Dióxido de Carbónico: este hecho tiene enorme importancia en el balance del CO2 atmosférico y en los fenómenos de retroalimentación causados por cambios de vegetación inducidos por el Cambio Climático Global. Es extremadamente importante para la modelización del Cambio Climático, tener una evaluación objetiva de formas de Carbono almacenadas en los suelos de zonas semiáridas. Por otro lado, en el caso del Carbono Inorgánico los datos cartográficos convencionales son inutilizables porque los perfiles taxonómicos no son suficientemente profundos. En el trabajo desarrollado, se realiza una evaluación del Carbono Orgánico e Inorgánico almacenado en los suelos del área de Guadix-Baza, de unos 6000 Km2, hasta una profundidad de 4 m. Se analizan los problemas metodológicos de este tipo de inventario, y se efectúa una evaluación de la fracción de Carbono de origen edáfico presente en los suelos mediante la técnica de isótopos estables. Finalmente se estiman las tasas de secuestro de Carbono en los suelos estudiados.
