Book Description
Excerpt from Secretary's Report, 1890, Vol. 2 The review of the history of the University for the past three years has been written by Fletcher, and to him, as well as the other mem bers of the Class who have so generously ofi'ered and given their assistance in collecting the necessary information, I desire to express my sincere thanks. It has been an exceedingly pleasant task to receive and file the many letters from you all, and again and again I have regretted my inability to answer. Let me say, as I have said before, that I am always glad to receive news from '87 men, and that it will very much increase the value of the records in my hands if you will from time to time notify me of any important occurrences in your lives. It is needless to say that any information as to Class matters that I may have in my possession, is always at the disposal of the Class, and will be very gladly furnished. Book Description
Excerpt from Secretary's Report, Vol. 1: July, 1882 I have the honor to present to you my first report as your Secretary. In the preparation of it I have followed quite closely the reports of the last two years, making but one change of any importance. The first list of the class on pages 5, ct seq. Has formerly contained the names of those who were regular members of the class during Senior year. Formerly no list has been given of those who received degrees. In this report the first list is of those who received degrees. To this fact the double column entitled Class of 1882 in the statistics (probable occu pation, etc.) is due. The first half of this column gives the statistics of those who were regular members of the class during the Senior year, the second the statistics of those who received degrees. Thus our class may be compared with preceding classes and also the statistics of our class, as composed of those who received degrees, may be examined. I imagine that eventually the statistics of graduating classes given by secretaries will be of those graduating, and with this idea in mind I have made the change. At any rate it seems to me that the report ought to contain a list of those who graduate. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Secretary's Report, Vol. 4: August, 1890 The amount unpaid on your subscriptions made ten years ago to the class and college funds is discouraging. In spite of semi-annual reminders of your indebtedness many of you seem to consider the account as something to be paid only when perfectly convenient, and forget that obligations have been entered into and expenses incurred on the strength of your subscriptions. I shall attempt this summer to collect the unpaid balance by personal letters, and shall be really grateful to any of you who will save me the trouble by closing your account at once. I am indebted to the class secretaries of 1877 and 1882 for per mission to use the negatives of heliotypes prepared for their reports, issued this year. Book Description
Excerpt from Harvard College, Class of 1890: Secretary's Report, No. 2 I take pleasure in submitting to you this record of the Class since graduation. To my inquiries for news the bulk of the answers have been cheerfully given, and though these have often erred from being too brief, this has probably been from lack of matter to record, a defect which time and a careful study of the model letters of reply which you will find at the end of this volume will remedy. I wish to thank especially the men who have furnished me with information about other members of the Class. There are still several as the Report shows from whom I have not heard. And I should be grateful for any information about them. In this Report I have dropped from the list of temporary mem bers of the Class the names of all men from whom I have not heard and who showed no interest in keeping up their connection with the Class. I have, on the other hand, included the names of several men who were associated with older classes, but who secured their degrees with the Class of '90. The reason for this is that these Reports must conform as far as possible with the Quinquennial Catalogue and the list of addresses of living gradu' ates, which is now issued yearly from the office of the University, and if the names of such men are not reported for the list from this class, they will not be reported at all. I regret to have already to record the deaths of four members of the Class since the issue of the last Report - Blunt, Burrage, Dexter of Boston and Endicott. The Class Fund is in a satisfactory state, and after the present year will more than meet the expenses of the Class. In the absence of the Chairman of the Class Committee and the Class Treasurer in Europe, Mr. Pulsifer and the Class Secretary at times have taken charge of the funds which it has seemed best to deposit for the present in Saving Banks rather than any other form of investment. Book Description
Excerpt from Secretary's Report, No. II, 1884 A few who graduated are lost, as the records will show but several who were lying hid showed themselves after repeated appeals from me. Of members of the Class who did not graduate, the proportion of those lost and hiding is of course much larger, for many, who stayed with us but a few weeks or months, felt that the ties that bound them to the Class were so slight that they were broken when they left the College and Cambridge and then, too, it is hardly reasonable for the Secretary of our Class to expect communications from many of those who were ever connected with the glorious Class of seventy-seven (of whom we had a goodly sprinkling) when they can report them selves to the Secretary of that Class, though, thanks to Mr. Russell, seventy-seven's Secretary, 1 am enabled to make my records much more complete in this direction than they would otherwise be. I suppose there are some among us who are so innately modest that they dislike the idea of any printed mention of themselves, and this I judge to be the reason why some answers to my inquiries were delayed so long, and others are still wanting. There are some names, that, closely identified with our Class in most respects, I am against my will obliged to place among Members not Graduates, but the Faculty had to draw the line somewhere, though I can but think that they were feeling out of sorts when they drew it. It may be a surprise to some to learn, that, though we have thirty six lawyers among our graduates, and fifteen among those who did not graduate with us, we are considerably below the average of the classes near us, in lawyers. Seventy-six has 37 per cent among its graduates, and a total of 32 per cent, including all members. Seventy - Seven has, graduates 31 per cent, total 26 per cent. Seventy-nine has.
