Bild der Bühne, Vol. 2 / Setting the Stage, Vol. 2
Author: Mirka Döring
Publisher: Verlag Theater der Zeit
ISBN: 3957491835
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : de
Pages : 196
Book Description
The theatre magazine Theater der Zeit has been following the developments of stage design for some years now in its "Kunstinserts". There we asked stage designers about their motivation, their working methods, the way they collaborate with directors, how their artistic practice unfolds in a theatre context. With a heuristic approach eschewing any claim to completeness, we promoted discussion, whether it was to mark a new production or because the artists in question were breaking new ground in the development of theatre. More than anything it is these direct statements from the artists which distinguish this workbook from the 1998 "Bild der Bühne", which presented such in uential artists as Robert Wilson, Achim Freyer, Jürgen Rose, Einar Schleef and Anna Viebrock. In "Setting the Stage" we have once again brought together seventeen of the most diverse artistic personalities; collectively they demonstrate how artistic considerations – at once purposeful and inevitable – function in the mode of an increas- ingly radical and con dent self-conception of the theatre as gesamtkunstwerk.

Hitler′s Prisons - Legal Terror in Nazi Germany
Author: Nikolaus Wachsmann
Publisher: Yale University Press
ISBN: 0300217293
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 556
Book Description
State prisons played an indispensable part in the terror of the Third Reich, incarcerating many hundreds of thousands of men and women during the Nazi era. This important book illuminates the previously unknown world of Nazi prisons, their victims, and the judicial and penal officials who built and operated this system of brutal legal terror. Nikolaus Wachsmann describes the operation and function of legal terror in the Third Reich and brings Nazi prisons to life through the harrowing stories of individual inmates. Drawing on a vast array of archival materials, he traces the series of changes in prison policies and practice that led eventually to racial terror, brutal violence, slave labor, starvation, and mass killings. Wachsmann demonstrates that "ordinary" legal officials were ready collaborators who helped to turn courts and prisons into key components in the Nazi web of terror. And he concludes with a discussion of the whitewash of the Nazi legal system in postwar West Germany.

Unheroic Conduct
Author: Daniel Boyarin
Publisher: Univ of California Press
ISBN: 0520210506
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 420
Book Description
The Western notion of the aggressive, sexually dominant male and the passive female, as Daniel Boyarin makes clear, is not universal. Analyzing ancient and modern texts, he recovers the studious and gentle rabbi as the male ideal and the prime object of the female desire in traditional Jewish society. Challenging those who view the "feminized Jew" as a pathological product of the Diaspora or a figment of anti-Semitic imagination, Boyarin finds the origins of the rabbinic model of masculinity in the Talmud. The book provides an unrelenting critique of the oppression of women in rabbinic society, while also arguing that later European bourgeois society disempowered women even further. Boyarin also analyzes the self-transformation of three iconic Viennese modern Jews: Sigmund Freud, Theodor Herzl, and Bertha Pappenheim (Anna O.). Pappenheim is Boyarin's hero: it is she who provides him with a model for a militant feminist, anti-homophobic transformation of Orthodox Jewish society today.

Costume in Performance
Author: Donatella Barbieri
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 147423688X
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 377
Book Description
Winner of Best Performance Design and Scenography Publication Award, Prague Quadrennial 2019 This beautifully illustrated book conveys the centrality of costume to live performance. Finding associations between contemporary practices and historical manifestations, costume is explored in six thematic chapters, examining the transformative ritual of costuming; choruses as reflective of society; the grotesque, transgressive costume; the female sublime as emancipation; costume as sculptural art in motion; and the here-and-now as history. Viewing the material costume as a crucial aspect in the preparation, presentation and reception of live performance, the book brings together costumed performances through history. These range from ancient Greece to modern experimental productions, from medieval theatre to modernist dance, from the 'fashion plays' to contemporary Shakespeare, marking developments in both culture and performance. Revealing the relationship between dress, the body and human existence, and acknowledging a global as well as an Anglo and Eurocentric perspective, this book shows costume's ability to cross both geographical and disciplinary borders. Through it, we come to question the extent to which the material costume actually co-authors the performance itself, speaking of embodied histories, states of being and never-before imagined futures, which come to life in the temporary space of the performance. With a contribution by Melissa Trimingham, University of Kent, UK
