It was actually coined by real estate developers Russell and Ferry, in an effort to promote the city as a future "Queen City of the Pacific", probably to encourage development."The Emerald City" refers to the lush greenery surrounding the city. We'll explore the nature in a later chapter. Emerald City has also been adapted to promote something: Tourism. Tourism is a large part of our economy. We have always been a town of passer-throughs, being first and primarily a seaport city, but we have reached over 10 million overnight visitors recently, and close to $6 billion dollars, that's right, billion, is spent annually by visitors to Seattle.
