Book Description
Searching Sand Crabs in the Dark recounts a journey inward-a spiral down-of someone who has spent a career meeting the challenges of global chaos in the service of the government and private sector. Terry's experience of joy, loss, pain, and celebration, captured in the poems, is anchored in centering prayer-a prayer of silence and meditation. The spirituality of the Christian mystics-Meister Eckhardt, John Main, and Bede Griffiths-joins the inspiration of Sufism, Zen Buddhism, and Shamanism to create a life tapestry. From riding a crest of a wave in an ocean kayak crashing toward the shore, observing the unfolding of a rose from cramped quarters in Kabul, leaning into a Nor'easter and learning trust in the process, Terry brings the no-space of pre-utterance to the surface in the rhythm, color, and harmony of verse to form a portal back into the soul to re-discover Love.

Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 320
Book Description
I’m not exactly a diamonds and champagne type of girl. Did the fact that I’m a demon-slaying biker witch give it away? But when an ancient cult becomes the “in” thing in Beverly Hills, I can’t let it slide. Something is off, and as a demon slayer, I’ve learned to always trust my instincts. They say it’s all youth potions, parties, and priceless Egyptian artifacts, but there’s a demon involved…and I’m not welcome. It’s not the first time I’ve been kicked out of a place. I go in undercover, along with my sexy Greek shape-shifter husband, my biker witch buddies, and a dog that is way too fond of free appetizers and the red-carpet lifestyle. Between dodging detection and uncovering ancient secrets, I have my hands full. And when the demon manages to hook his claws into my eternal soul, I realize I may be stepping out for my final event.

Dark Nights, Bright Lights
Author: Susanne Bach
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3110415623
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 213
Book Description
Light and darkness shape our perception of the world. This is true in a literal sense, but also metaphorically: in theology, philosophy, literature and the arts the light of day signifies life, safety, knowledge and all that is good, while the darkness of the night suggests death, danger, ignorance and evil. A closer inspection, however, reveals that things are not quite so clear cut and that light and darkness cannot be understood as simple binary opposites. On a biological level, for example, daylight and darkness are inseparable factors in the calibration of our circadian rhythms, and a lack of periodical darkness appears to be as contrary to health as a lack of exposure to sunlight. On a cultural level, too, night and darkness are far from being universally condemnable: in fiction, drama and poetry the darkness of the night allows not only nightmares but also dreams, it allows criminals to ply their trade and allows lovers to meet, it allows the pursuit of pleasure as well as deep thought, it allows metamorphoses, transformations and transgressions unthinkable in the light of day. But night is not merely darkness. The night gains significance as an alternative space, as an ‘other of the day’, only when it is at least partially illuminated. The volume examines the interconnection of night, darkness and nocturnal illumination across a broad range of literary texts. The individual essays examine historically specific light conditions in literature, tracing the symbolic and metaphoric content of darkness and illumination and the attitudes towards them.

The Rock: Looking into Australia's ‘Heart of Darkness’ from the edge of its wild frontier
Author: Aaron Smith
Publisher: Transit Lounge
ISBN: 1925760685
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 339
Book Description
Journalist Aaron Smith's new memoir holds up a unique mirror to Australia. What he sees is at once amazing, disturbing and revealing. The Rock explores the failings of our nation's character, its unresolved past and its uncertain future from the vantage point of its most northerly outpost, Thursday Island. Smith was the last editor, fearless journalist and the paperboy of Australia's most northerly newspaper, the Torres News, a small independent regional tabloid that, until it folded in late 2019, was the voice of a predominantly Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal readership for 63 years across some of the most remote and little understood communities in Australia. The Rock is a story of self-discovery where Smith grapples to understand a national identity marred by its racist underbelly, where he is transplanted from his white-boy privileged suburban life to being a racial and cultural minority, and an outsider. Peppered with his experiences, Smith gradually and sensitively becomes embedded in island life while vividly capturing the endless and often farcical parade of personalities and politicians including Scott Morrison and Tony Abbott. Smith pulls no punches while he reflects on the history of Terra Australis incognita, dissecting what is truly Australia, and its gaping cultural and moral divide. 'A credit to regional journalism, Aaron carried on the fine tradition of the Torres News holding governments to account and telling stories of everyday life in the Straits, never shying away from controversies, lifting all the rocks and even out foxing prime minister Tony Abbott on his visit to Mabo's grave.' — Stefan Armbruster, SBS 'Aaron Smith makes a huge and extremely valuable contribution to journalism in Australia. With insight and committment he brings issues of national and international significance to audiences in Australia and beyond.' — Dr Tess Newton Cain, Griffith Asia Institute 'Aaron's journalism has provided a rare and valuable insight into issues affecting the Torres Strait Islander community. Navigating cultural protocols and geographical challenges, he has given a voice to some of Australia's most marginalised people and shared important stories that would otherwise have gone unheard.' — Ella Archibald-Binge, Sydney Morning Herald

Pure Life
Author: Eugene Marten
Publisher: Strange Light
ISBN: 0771051778
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 385
Book Description
A harrowing, intense, powerful new novel that reads like a classic, from one of the great writers of his generation. Nineteen battles his way into the pros, becomes the quarterback, becomes the myth. Marries the owner’s daughter, touches greatness few will ever dream of, retires into what he assumes will be the promised afterlife of days on the golf course, celebrity endorsements, and cushy real estate investments. But markets tank, family disintegrates, fame fades, and the holes in his mind and memory from a career of punishment on the field become too large and frightening to ignore. When he hears of a miracle brain damage treatment forbidden in the U.S., he travels to the Mosquito Coast of Honduras in search of a chance to restore himself to the man he was. Instead, he finds himself on a journey that plunges him into a darkness more violent and horrific than he could have possibly imagined—at once a fight for his life and to hold onto the shards and fragments of the life he’s fighting for. A sports saga, sprawling thriller, and existential reckoning with the rot at the core of the west, told by an unheralded, singular master, Pure Life is a daring, complex, and brutal confrontation with and demolition of our modern myths in the most primal of settings—one as perilous as it is imperiled.
