Historical Bibliography of Sea Mine Warfare
Author: Andrew Patterson
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Submarine mines
Languages : en
Pages : 164
Book Description
One of the several objectives of the PROJECT NIMROD effort was to correct a number of misconceptions regarding the effectiveness of the mine as a modern naval weapon: misconceptions which consistently rendered more difficult the support of an aggressive research and development program. The results of this effort were included in the final report of PROJECT NIMROD, and subsequently issued as a separate report entitled 'A Brief History of Mine Warfare.' Research on the 'History' provided an unique opportunity to assemble most of the historical literature on mine warfare. Having gone to considerable effort to identify and gain access to well over two thousand documents, continuing to the present time, the authors believe the effort should be preserved in the form of a bibliography for use by future researchers. This document is offered for that purpose.

Author: Martin Gardner
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 1470463520
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 200
Book Description
Martin Gardner's Mathematical Games columns in Scientific American inspired and entertained several generations of mathematicians and scientists. Gardner in his crystal-clear prose illuminated corners of mathematics, especially recreational mathematics, that most people had no idea existed. His playful spirit and inquisitive nature invite the reader into an exploration of beautiful mathematical ideas along with him. These columns were both a revelation and a gift when he wrote them; no one--before Gardner--had written about mathematics like this. They continue to be a marvel. This volume, originally published in 1959, contains the first sixteen columns published in the magazine from 1956-1958. They were reviewed and briefly updated by Gardner for this 1988 edition.

Staff Ride Handbook For The Vicksburg Campaign, December 1862-July 1863 [Illustrated Edition]
Author: Dr. Christopher Gabel
Publisher: Pickle Partners Publishing
ISBN: 1782899359
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 256
Book Description
Includes over 30 maps and Illustrations The Staff Ride Handbook for the Vicksburg Campaign, December 1862-July 1863, provides a systematic approach to the analysis of this key Civil War campaign. Part I describes the organization of the Union and Confederate Armies, detailing their weapons, tactics, and logistical, engineer, communications, and medical support. It also includes a description of the U.S. Navy elements that featured so prominently in the campaign. Part II consists of a campaign overview that establishes the context for the individual actions to be studied in the field. Part III consists of a suggested itinerary of sites to visit in order to obtain a concrete view of the campaign in its several phases. For each site, or “stand,” there is a set of travel directions, a discussion of the action that occurred there, and vignettes by participants in the campaign that further explain the action and which also allow the student to sense the human “face of battle.” Part IV provides practical information on conducting a Staff Ride in the Vicksburg area, including sources of assistance and logistical considerations. Appendix A outlines the order of battle for the significant actions in the campaign. Appendix B provides biographical sketches of key participants. Appendix C provides an overview of Medal of Honor conferral in the campaign. An annotated bibliography suggests sources for preliminary study.
