The School Health and Alcohol Harm Reduction Project (SHAHRP) and SHAHRP 2000 are research studies conducted over a seven year period with aims to reduce alcohol related harm among secondary school students. The studies are being conducted by the National Drug Research Institute and are funded by Healthway, the Western Australian Health Promotion Foundation. The studies reflect the Australian National Drug Strategy by adopting a harm minimisation approach, in this case, by providing three phases of alcohol harm reduction lessons during secondary school and aiming to reduce the level of alcohol related harms in students who drink alcohol, and to reduce the harms experienced by those students who do not drink alcohol but interact with others who do drink. It contains information about SHAHRP and its publications, with links to online abstracts and related sites.

The research undertaken for this thesis involved the evaluation of two interventions, one an alcohol, harm reduction program for secondary school students, and the other a health promotion intervention for primary school students. The first of these was the principal focus of the thesis and involved assessment of the impact of the School Health and Alcohol Harm Reduction Project (SHAHRP) (alcohol intervention) on secondary students alcohol related knowledge, attitudes and behaviours. The Western Australian School Health Project (WASH) (health promotion intervention) was an opportunistic inclusion into the study and a minor focus. The alcohol intervention was informed by a systematic review of the school drug education area, which sought to identify components that would enhance potential for behaviour change in the target population. The systematic review was bounded by a set of criteria to ensure appropriate selection and assessment of the extensive amount of literature available on school drug education. The review included assessment of previous reviews of school drug education, and assessment of recent, effective primary studies. Of the 165 review documents uncovered, 19 met the inclusion criteria. Of the 65 recent primary studies uncovered, four met the inclusion criteria. The findings of these reviews and recent primary studies were collated with emphasis given to timing and programming issues; content and delivery issues; teacher training; dissemination, and research and evaluation issues. The findings of the systematic review conducted for this thesis, guided both the intervention and the research design of the study. A summary of the findings is provided within the methodology section of this thesis.
