Book Description
Important strides have been made in understanding the pathophysiologic basis of many inflammatory conditions in recent years, but rheumatology remains a discipline in which diagnosis is rooted in the medical history skillfully extracted from the patient, the careful physical examination, and the discriminating use of laboratory tests and imaging. Moreover, selection of the most appropriate therapy for patients with rheumatic diseases also remains heavily reliant upon clinical experience. Medical disciplines such as rheumatology that depend significantly upon clinical wisdom are prone to the development of systems of ‘Pearls’ and ‘Myths,’ related to the diseases they call their own, a ‘Pearl’ being a nugget of truth about the diagnosis or treatment of a particular disease that has been gained by dint of clinical experience and a ‘Myth’ being a commonly held belief that influences the practice of many clinicians – but is false. This book will pool together the clinical wisdom of seasoned, expert rheumatologists who participate in the care of patients with autoimmune diseases, systemic inflammatory disorders, and all other rheumatic conditions.

Major Infectious Diseases identifies feasible, cost-effective packages of interventions and strategies across delivery platforms to prevent and treat HIV/AIDS, other sexually transmitted infections, tuberculosis, malaria, adult febrile illness, viral hepatitis, and neglected tropical diseases. The volume emphasizes the need to effectively address emerging antimicrobial resistance, strengthen health systems, and increase access to care. The attainable goals are to reduce incidence, develop innovative approaches, and optimize existing tools in resource-constrained settings.

Book Description
Sarcoidosis is a rare condition that causes small patches of red and swollen tissue, called granulomas, to develop in the organs of the body. It most often affects the lungs and skin. Typical symptoms include tender, red bumps on the skin, shortness of breath and a persistent cough. There is no cure for sarcoidosis, but the condition often improves without treatment within a few months or years. Sarcoidosis is estimated to affect about 1 in every 10,000 people in the UK (NHS Choices). Part of the Clinical Focus Series, this book provides trainees with an overview of this complex condition. Beginning with an introduction and guidance on recognising pulmonary granulomas, the following chapters provide in depth coverage of numerous common lesions, describing their history, clinical features, differential diagnosis and treatment. Presented in an easy to read format, this useful reference includes clinical photographs, CT scans and X-rays, histological pictures and tables to enhance learning. Key points Provides practical overview of lesions of sarcoidosis Covers numerous common lesions, their history, clinical features, diagnosis and treatment Presented in easy to read format, with problem solving approach Includes clinical photographs, CT Scans, X-rays, histological pictures and tables

Book Description
Since the first edition of this book in 1967, interest in sarcoidosis has increased world-wide, leading to increasing numbers of published clinical, epidemiological and laboratory studies, notably in immunology and in the pathogenesis of granulomatous inflammation. Aseries of international con ferences which started as an informal gathering in London in. 1958 has continued at approximately three-yearly intervals with increasing numbers of participants and more formal organisation, and the proceedings of all but the first have been published. When the preparation of a second edition was suggested to me, I consi dered several questions. ls there still a piace for a comprehensive, clinically orientated book on sarcoidosis? Although the reports of the international conferences bring together research reports and some reviews of topics of contemporary interest, they are useful principally to specialists in the sub ject; and, like the original papers scattered through many journals, are not convenient sources of reference for clinicians. Continued enquiries about the availability of the first edition long after it had gone out of print suggested that it had provided such a source. I therefore concluded that a second edition should be prepared, and then had to consider whether, as a physician retired from academic and hospital appointments, I was the right person to undertake the major task of incorporating in it the still-relevant parts of the first edition, the considerable amount of new information that had accumulated since 1967, and a conspectus of current studies.
