Book Description
The quiet and seclusion of a monastery, abbey, or retreat center provide the time, space, and conditions for the mind to come to stillness. This volume features 127 such places from many spiritual paths: Catholic, Protestant, Buddhist, Jewish, Hindu, Sufi, Quaker. The places themselves are often beautiful, overlooking the sea, or high in the mountains. Some are mansions given to religious orders, with lovely gardens, some are spare Zen temples, some are simple cabins in the woods. All offer a warm welcome to guests seeking a place apart. Molly O'Neil in the New York Times said "The book...is becoming the Michelin guide of the retreat set."

Book Description
An extraordinary illustrated overview of the National Marine Sanctuary System and a guide to its fourteen protected underwater locations America's Marine Sanctuaries tells the story of fourteen underwater places so important they are under special protection, together forming the US National Marine Sanctuary System. These sanctuaries, spanning more than 620,000 square miles and ranging from the Florida Keys to the Great Lakes and to the Hawaiian Islands, are critical and breathtaking marine habitats that provide homes to endangered and threatened species. They also preserve America's rich maritime heritage and act as living laboratories for science, research, education, and conservation, offering outdoor recreation experiences for all ages. Through 175 full-color photographs and lively narrative, America's Marine Sanctuaries showcases each of the marine sanctuaries and the creatures that live there, from whales and manatees to Hawaiian monk seals and Laysan ducks, as well as sunken ships from the Ghost Fleet and USS Monitor to Shipwreck Alley. The book underscores how marine sanctuaries have shaped the nation's development, survival, and identity, and celebrates these protected underwater treasures for all they can tell us about our communities, our country, and our world.

Book Description
Animal Kingdoms puts sanctuaries in perspective through the imagery of veteran writers and photographers. Kenneth Brower, whose career has taken him to many North American parks, explores the animal magic of greater Yellowstone. National Geographic senior writer Tom Melham draws on experiences of various South American assignments as he delves into that continent's zoological riches. While British author Anthony Smith recalls past and present wanderings in East Africa, fellow Briton Douglas Botting reminisces about Europe's diverse wildlife reserves. Asia specialist Patrick R. Booz visits India's Kaziranga, in the shadow of the Himalaya. Australian Graham Pizzey marvels at his country's unique refuges, especially a park known by the Aborigine-inspired name of Kakadu. Together, the six authors sample some of nature's most fascinating and diverse remnants: the world's animal kingdoms.

Book Description
These days more and more people are scheduling getaways to retreat centers for their spiritual well-being--over 1.2 million Catholics alone during 1997. Located throughout the United States and Canada, these centers cater to the needs of people seeking quiet time, regardless of religious affiliation. Retreat possibilities range from one day of solitude surrounded by nature, to a few days of quiet time under the guidance of a resident spiritual director, to a week experiencing the rigorous rhythms of community monastery life. In A PLACE FOR GOD, Timothy Jones shares the wisdom of his pilgrimages to retreat centers as diverse as a mountaintop hermitage overlooking the Pacific and a monastic oasis on Chicago's South Side. First he explains everything about retreats: what they are, why people go, how to prepare, what to pack, and what to do while there. Then he provides an extensive directory of over 250 retreat centers in all fifty states and Canada, complete with all the information readers need to contact the retreat center that is right for them. A PLACE FOR GOD is the perfect resource for anyone who wants to find spiritual fulfillment or simply a place to get away.

Book Description
A fascinating and unprecedented ethnography of animal sanctuaries in the United States In the past three decades, animal rights advocates have established everything from elephant sanctuaries in Africa to shelters that rehabilitate animals used in medical testing, to homes for farmed animals, abandoned pets, and entertainment animals that have outlived their “usefulness.” Saving Animals is the first major ethnography to focus on the ethical issues animating the establishment of such places, where animals who have been mistreated or destined for slaughter are allowed to live out their lives simply being animals. Based on fieldwork at animal rescue facilities across the United States, Elan Abrell asks what “saving,” “caring for,” and “sanctuary” actually mean. He considers sanctuaries as laboratories where caregivers conceive and implement new models of caring for and relating to animals. He explores the ethical decision making around sanctuary efforts to unmake property-based human–animal relations by creating spaces in which humans interact with animals as autonomous subjects. Saving Animals illustrates how caregivers and animals respond by cocreating new human–animal ecologies adapted to the material and social conditions of the Anthropocene. Bridging anthropology with animal studies and political philosophy, Saving Animals asks us to imagine less harmful modes of existence in a troubled world where both animals and humans seek sanctuary.

Book Description
This book proposes that we can learn from Tokyo about the instrinsic importance of in-between realms to an international culture: the sanctuaries. It argues that certain urban societies are more robust than others because they offer socio-spatial capacities that enable the development of skills for coping with modern forms of living. It studies places that may open the way to an international culture, namely market places, venues for performing arts and religious sites, which – with particular reference to the Durkheimian tradition – are considered here in their quality as sanctuaries. From its empirical analysis of such sanctuaries in Tokyo, this book develops a more general theory about mega-cities, urban sociability and identity.
