The repeated inroads of the French and Indians on the frontiers ofvir'ginia. Made it necessary to increase the military establishment; and early in the spring Of 1754, a new regiment was raided, of which Professor Fry, pf the college was appointed Col. And Washington lieutenant-colonel. Mr Fry died soon after the r ment was embodied, and was succeeded by our hero, who paid unremitting/attention to the discipline of this new corps. He esta'blished magazines ofprovision and ammunition, and opened the roads to'the frontiers in order to pro-occupy an. Important post at the confluence. Of the Monongahela and Alleghany rirers. His regi ment was to have been reinforced by a detachment from the southern colonies, and a corps of provi'ncials froin North Carolina and Maryland but impelled by the'or gency of the occasion. The troops proceed ed by forced marches towards the defile, and their com mander dispatched two scouts to reconnoitret but thou h his rapid march was facilitated by the fine west er, yet, when he ascended the Laurel Hills, miles distant from the place of destination, he yaa met by his scouts who returned with intelligence, that the enemy 'were in possession of the poet, t built a fort, and stationed alarge garrison there. Was ing ton now held a council of, war With the other officers; but while they were deliberating a detatchment of the French came in sight.
