Book Description
Excerpt from Sabbath-Day Book for Boys and Girls The design of this work is to furnish interesting and useful reading for children on the Sabbath day; it comprises familiar directions in regard to the manner in which the day should be observed, illustrations of the various moral and religious duties of children, practical expositions of scripture, with directions for studying it, and narratives and descriptions calculated to interest the youthful mind and promote its spiritual improvement. The work consists in part of original matter, and in part of selections from such writings as are adapted to the purpose in view. In these selections, care has been taken, to draw from such sources as are not generally accessible to children, so that the whole volume will be in most cases new, and the editors hope that it may render some aid at least to parents in their efforts to exert a proper influence over their children, and to find suitable and interesting employment for them on the sacred day. Excerpt from Sabbath Talks With Little Children: On the Psalms of David "No, my son; I cannot possibly tell." "Perhaps then it was your mother. She has taken care of you ever since you were a tiny baby. She watched over you when you were sick. She loves you better, and knows more about you than any one on earth. Let us ask her." "Mother, have you ever counted the hairs on my head? Somebody has - was it you, mother?" "No, my dear little boy. I can tell how old you are; and how many feet and hands you have; and how many eyes; and how many teeth; and I know how many aprons and stockings you have. I have combed and brushed your head a great many times, but I cannot possibly tell how many hairs there are upon it." Excerpt from The Lord's Day, Our Sabbath We do not give these opinions of distinguished men with the thought that they will help to popularize an essay which otherwise might attract no attention, but to show that we have taken reasonable precaution to sift out and crystallize only the safest and surest arguments which could be grouped in small compass, in the hope of convincing doubt ing minds that God's foundation truth lies directly under the history of the Christian Church in its observance of the Lord's Day, and of Showing that those who would under mine this truth must dig deeper than Sabbatarians yet have done or may hope to do.
