Book Description
Excerpt from Russia's Agony Russia has to voice her sentiment otherwise. The time for peaceful expression will come when the hostile garrison of Bolshevism and its German supporters have been driven out. What form of government mayr then be adopted by the free decision of the Russian people concerns only them selves. Three centuries ago they elected a Tsar of the Romanovs. The elements of a true democracy were embodied in the Zemsky Sobor, or Assembly of the Land. But Russia then was dominated by Byzantine tradition, and later by Ger man influence. The voice of the people was dulled by these nu-russian forces. Freed of their deadening power, Russia will assert the principles of justice and true democracy that are inherent to the Russian character. Her troubles came not from the Monarchy, but from the alien influences that the Monarchy imbibed. The German incubus will have been removed ere Russia can revive. Of that revival I perceive sure and certain promise. I believe that the Russian people were destined to play an exalted part in the advancement of mankind, and that the day will soon dawn when the peoples of the world will duly appreciate the sacrifices that the Russians have endured, not less than the services that they render to the common cause of humanity. It 13 with this confidence that I am leaving the hospitable shores of America to rejoin my Russian com rades in the great adventure of this unparalleled war - the restoration of Russia. Book Description
Excerpt from Victory in Defeat: The Agony of Warsaw and the Russian Retreat This little volume has been written with the intention of presenting as far as possible at this time, and within the information avail able to the writer, the Russian side of the great campaign which ended in the capture of War saw by the Germans, and was followed by the great Russian retreat. There are many assets in war as there are in peace, and the greatest among these is character. Efficiency, prepa ration, and science have their innings at the beginning of a conflict, but the one enduring asset which a nation has is the character of its people. If time be given for this to develop, then the end is certain. The great crisis in Russia was during that period when the psy chology of the nation was crystallizing, and when this had taken place the danger to Russia was largely passed. Certainly I would in no way minimize the strength, fortitude, and. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Russia's Agony To my readers: In the following pages I speak of Russian affairs with the experience of an observer who has lived from early boyhood among the Russian people and has shared with them their joys and sorrows. "Russia's Agony" was written in compliance with a personal call and with the discharge of a public duty; it combines a human document with a historical treatise. Men, events and conditions have, I believe, been dealt with in a spirit of fairness, for although the original edition of this book was begun and completed a year ago, the storm and stress of later developments call for no substantial changes. That a comprehensive account of Russia from the inside was in demand has been shown by the rapid exhaustion of several impressions of this work, and indicated by the publication of an American edition. Serious study of Russian affairs is more than ever important, and even necessary, for every thinking man and woman, not only because of the ignorance that prevails on the subject - a great handicap to us in the War - but because of the great social drama that has been staged in that country. Since her collapse, Russia has become the focus of social unrest throughout the world. Bolshevism - a foe more deadly to our civilization than German Militarism - cannot be effectively combated unless we understand the circumstances of its origin and working, indissolubly connected with the so-called Russian Revolution - a Revolution that has still to justify its name. Book Description
Excerpt from The New Russia Russia is just at present on the eve of the most momentous period of its history. Within the last year we have already witnessed the prologue of the great drama which is about to be played. TO those who are not intimately acquainted with Russia and her people, this prologue must have appeared incoherent and almost impossible to under stand, for the best of reasons, that the actors did not know themselves the meaning of the parts which they were acting. It was a case of irresponsible followers rushing behind incoherent leaders. The truth is that the Russians had suddenly awakened out Of the most ghastly nightmare, and, still dazed and only half awake, the nightmare still vivid in their minds, they had but one thought - to rush madly headlong, in order to escape from its horrors. They rushed about, anywhere, anyhow, not caring where they went so long as they ran. In the same way does a patient, suffering from cardiac distress, rush about the room to try and escape from the agony which he endures. Book Description
Excerpt from Six Years at the Russian Court The English daily papers described the Emperor and his family as having fled in their yacht, at a time when the yacht was deeply embedded in ice outside Kronstadt. I could multiply such stories ad lib., but merely wish to draw attention to the fact that so much that is written regarding Russia and the Imperial family is absolutely untrue, so little is really known about the Court life, that I am emboldened to offer my slight sketches of life in the Palaces. It would be very easy for me to pile on the agony, to represent the Emperor as a much ridden man; to picture plots and counter plots; to speak of hairbreadth escapes from death; of hidden bombs; of life made horrible by fears but no such things have occurred in my six years at the Russian Court, and I am a truthful person, and have not started forth to write fiction, but plain, unvarnished truth. Book Description
Excerpt from The Brothers Karamazov: Translated From the Russian One of the prisoners, Grigoryev, went mad as soon as he was untied and never regained his sanity. The intense suffering of this experience left a lasting stamp on Dostoyevsky's mind. Though his religious temper led him in the end to accept every suffering with resignation and to regard it as a blessing in his own case, he constantly recurs to the subject in his writings. He describes the awful agony of the condemned man and insists on the cruelty of inflicting such torture. Then followed four years of penal servitude, spent in the company of common criminals in Siberia, where he began the Dead House, and some years of service in a disciplinary battalion. Book Description
"In daily accounts, Ansky details his struggles: to raise funds; to lobby and bribe at the czar's court; and to procure and transport food, medicine, and money to the ravaged Jewish towns, which, in the course of the war, were conquered and reconquered by Cossacks, Germans, Polish mercenaries, and Russian revolutionaries. Ansky depicts scenes of devastation - convoys of refugees, towns looted and burned to the ground, villagers taken hostage and raped, prey to all comers. Speaking to maids and ministers, farmers and recruits, doctors and profiteers, Ansky hears and sees it all, as the czar's army disintegrates and the winds of revolution sweep across the land."--BOOK JACKET.
