Tbis book is intended to provide a few asymptotic methods which can be applied to the dynamics of self-oscillating fields of the reaction-diffusion type and of some related systems. Such systems, forming cooperative fields of a large num of interacting similar subunits, are considered as typical synergetic systems. ber Because each local subunit itself represents an active dynamical system function ing only in far-from-equilibrium situations, the entire system is capable of showing a variety of curious pattern formations and turbulencelike behaviors quite unfamiliar in thermodynamic cooperative fields. I personally believe that the nonlinear dynamics, deterministic or statistical, of fields composed of similar active (Le., non-equilibrium) elements will form an extremely attractive branch of physics in the near future. For the study of non-equilibrium cooperative systems, some theoretical guid ing principle would be highly desirable. In this connection, this book pushes for ward a particular physical viewpoint based on the slaving principle. The dis covery of tbis principle in non-equilibrium phase transitions, especially in lasers, was due to Hermann Haken. The great utility of this concept will again be dem onstrated in tbis book for the fields of coupled nonlinear oscillators.

In 1958 B. P. Belousov discovered that the oxidation of citric acid by bromate in the presence of cerium ions does not proceed to equilibrium methodically and uniformly, like most chemical reactions, but rather oscillates with clocklike precision between a yellow and colorless state. See Fig. 11. 1, p. 30. A. M. Zhabotinskii followed up on Belousov's original observation and in 1964 his first investigations appeared in the Russian journal Biofizika. Though H. Degn (in Copenhagen at the time) knew of Zhabotinskii's work and published his own account of the mechanism of oscillation in Nature (1967), this interesting reaction attracted little attention among Western scientists until 1968, when Zhabotinskii and his coworkers and Busse (from Braunschweig, W. Germany) reported on their work at an international conference on biological and biochemical oscillators held in Prague. Shortly thereafter appearedĀ· a flurry of papers on temporal oscillations and spatial patterns in this reaction system. Vavilin and Zhabotinskii (1969) [and later Kasperek and Bruice (1971)] studied the kinetics of the oxidation 3 of Ce+ by Br0 and the oxidation of organic species by Ce+4. Busse (1969) 3 reported his observation of colored bands of chemical activity propagating up and down in a long tube of unstirred solution. Zaikin and Zhabotinskii (1970) observed circular chemical waves in thin layers of solution.

Growth and Fonn is the title of a famous book written by D' Arcy Thomson at the beginning of the century. It relates a large number of problems of shapes of bodies either in the physical world or the biological realm. Keywords in this field are shapes, spirals, growth law, gravity field, surface tension, scaling laws, diffusion and mechanical efficiency. Considering the important abyss between this kind of concept and for instance, the huge fonnalism involving Green functions used to find operating points for dendritic growth, we immediatelty had the giggles for five minutes. This large domain was the occasion to confront many scientists from different areas (physicists, applied mathematicians, specialists of combustion, metallurgists and geologists).
