Book Description
Excerpt from Captain Molly: A Love Story Baby bassett was a marvel. Even in that child-ridden community, Flagler Tenement, to which some wag had given the sounding title of paradise flats, where the minor key in child ish sobs, and the major key in Childish laughter, prevailed from morning till night, that Bassett baby was a wonder and delight. Baby Bassett first saw the light in a cellar, which, however, made no difference to him. It really was a respectable cellar, as cellars go. The oor was hard, and two windows let in daylight from the sidewalk. At night it was brilliantly illuminated with a tallow dip. Inside it might have been gloomy; but Reine Bassett, the young and pretty mother of Baby Bassett, cared little for that. In hot weather, before that adorable baby came, the Bassetts sat upon the steps, and greeted their neighbors, who might be expressed as legion. After that important event happened, the neigh bors saluted the baby's mother with something like reverence. The baby was like a pure white lily, lying in his improvised bed made in a big clothes-basket. The father of this child, Sebastian Bassett, was in the first stages Of alcoholic decrepitude, and yet he was scarcely thirty years Old. The man had a history, but nobody knew what it was. He had no business to be either a husband or a father; yet there he was, an accepted fact, and with a superb presence that declared for good ancestry. His life was largely migratory. The only reason that he lived in the cellar of Paradise Flats was because he could get no lower. And yet the soul of an artist dwelt in that marred body. At one time he had painted marvellously well. His pic tures had sold for good prices, but every cent that came to him was spent for drink. Now, with an unsteady hand, and a certain scorn in his brilliant eyes, he drew wonderful outlines, when he was sober, on the Sidewalks, and rarely failed to earn a few pennies, which he spent in the ale-house. His wife, poor little thing, was the bread-win ner. She would willingly have worked her hands off to provide something for her vagabond to eat. Book Description
Molly Make-Believe By Eleanor Hallowell Abbott Excerpt aside he sank back luxuriantly again into his pillows, and grinned without any perceptible effort at all as he planned adroitly how he would paste the Serial Love Letters one by one into the gaudiest looking scrap-book that he could find and present it to Cornelia on her birthday as a text-book for the "newly engaged" girl. And he hoped and prayed with all his heart that every individual letter would be printed with crimson ink on a violet-scented page and would fairly reek from date to signature with all the joyous, ecstatic silliness that graces either an old-fashioned novel or a modern breach-of-promise suit. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Book Description
Excerpt from Molly White: Or the Bride Bewitched, a Tale Molly White. For love her lips and coal-black eyes were made; Her silver tresses on her shoulders stray'd; Good-humour still fat smiling on her face; She sung with sweetness as she danc'd with grace; And when she spoke none thought she spoke too long, Her speech was scarce less charming than her song. In cotton dress'd each holy-day she shone; At church all eyes were fix'd on her alone; Where'er she went her company was fought, Rich fairings too from all the fairs she brought; Such precious gifts no other maid cou'd boast, For Molly White was ev'ry shepherd's toast. Now sixteen winters had run o'er her head, And nature told her 'twas full time to wed: No fond admirer durst her lips profane, But her fair hand was squeez'd by ev'ry swain; Love's milder joys thus gently warm'd her breast And morning visions hinted all the rest. Such dreams as griev'd or gave her heart delight To her dear Bridget she reveal'd at night: About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
