Substantial numbers of Romanian immigrants came to Canada just after the turn of the century, and many of these early immigrants settled in Saskatchewan. The Saskatchewan Romanians reconstructed their homeland culture as best they could on the priaries, and preserved their ethnicity until recently. With the preservation of the culture came adaptation to the new setting, and this adaptation has modified the homeland culture and gradually diminished it. This article investigates the migration of Romanians to Canada from its beginning at the turn of the twentieth century to its present dwindling numbers. It gives an account of the main waves of migration, through the lens of ethnicity. It shows how Romanian ethnicity was formed and continuously remade in Canada at different historical junctures and immigration regimes.
