The study reassesses the chemical variations for Samian pottery manufactured at Lezoux, the largest production centre in Central Gaul during the second century A.D.. A compositional model is used to provenance unstamped plain Sanuan wares discovered at its consumer sites in Roman Britain. The use of instrumental neutron activation analysis and inductiveIy coupled plasma spectrometry allows for the two chemical techniques to be evaluated based on their individual capacity to identify the same compositional groups for Lezoux, with the use of multivariate statistics. The systematic investigation of Lezoux Samian revealed that from the end of the first century A.D. tilI the end of the second century A. D., the same clay source was used by all the potters from six different workshops on the site for the production of a Samian wares for large scale export. Its consumer sites in Britain, during the second century A.D., received approximately 60% of its unstamped plain Samian wares from Lezoux from all the Central Gaulish material that was analyzed. Furthermore, the study addresses the issue of how the chemical analysis of Samian wares for provenance could benefit Roman pottery studies in Britain.
