Nous nous sommes proposées comme objet d'étude les risques et les catastrophes urbains dans les villes méditerranéennes. Après avoir écláiré en quoi le concept de risque urbain était un concept pertinent et par contre comment celui de risque urbain méditerranéen était peu approprié, nous nous sommes attachées à étudier la complexité de ces risques. Cette complexité est générée par la conjonction de l'aléa et de la vulnérabilité, et par des effets de dominos. La modélisation en dynamique de système a été retenue pour construire des modèles de risque et de catastrophe. Dans cette thèse, où les recherches ont porté essentiellement sur les mécanismes et leurs combinaisons, le temps a donc été privilégié sous toutes ses formes. Différents modèles de catastrophes urbaines ont été construits et l'un d'entre eux, l'inondation dans les villes de Gênes et de Nice, a été particulièrement analysé.
