Quinny & Hopper
Author: Adriana Brad Schanen
Publisher: Hachette+ORM
ISBN: 1484707648
Category : Juvenile Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 191
Book Description
Quinny has a lot to say. Hopper gets to the point. Quinny has one speed: very, very, extra-very fast. Hopper proceeds with caution. Quinny has big ideas. Hopper has smart solutions. Quinny and Hopper couldn't be more different. They are an unstoppable team. But when summer ends, things suddenly aren't the same. Can Quinny and Hopper stick together in the face of stylish bullies, a killer chicken, and the brand-new Third Grade Rules-especially the one that says they aren't allowed to be friends anymore? Praise for Quinny & Hopper: "First-time children's author Schanen skillfully captures Quinny's zest and Hopper's timidity through their interactions and alternating narratives, and Swearingen's smudgy spot illustrations amplify the lively tone. The story's best moments showcase the spirited friendship between Quinny and Hopper, but there's much to appreciate throughout this exuberant debut." -- Publishers Weekly "The book is engrossing, and the likable duo change and grow in believable ways. Quinny and Hopper, who take turns narrating, have distinct, well-differentiated voices, and Schanen makes good use of her individuated secondary characters as well. Swearingen's black-and-white drawings both capture the spirit of the characters and enhance the narrative. This endearing story about true friendship should appeal equally to boys and girls." -- Kirkus Reviews

Ripped to Shreds
Author: David Nardi
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 1479743151
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 158
Book Description
"...I like the way you circle back again and again to several events to re-dig them up, new embellishments and revelations each time. This also made the book seem rather dream-like (a fevered dream, to be sure). Overall it left me wanting to hear and know more. Sometimes it read like a philosophical treatise, sometimes like an alternate socio-political history, and sometimes like a war/ human drama. The "hows" and whys" you presented are definitely not ideas I've ever heard, and I think are probably not at all mainstream, yet startingly plausible! That's what makes the book so eerily present..the actual possibility, through your experience..that this could have been the way things happened. Which send some shockwaves through everything American if we even consider the possibilities you reveal! Certainly the unique angles (The Sister's point of view and story, Nhu's presence, etc.) show the whole "war novel" experience from uniquely different angles. One thing the book left me wanting to know more about was about your Bronze Star. That's an almost hidden mystery and teaser, that you "didn't" say a whole lot about that..."
