Excerpt from Wagner and His Isolde On reading, in the German original, the letters and journals relating to one of the most fascinating episodes in Wagner's career, his romance with Mathilde Wesendonk, who inspired his "Tristan und Isolde," it seemed to me a foregone conclusion that the book would be translated in its entirety. But as a complete translation could result only in a bulky and somewhat expensive publication, and as, in my judgment, there were many portions which could be omitted without lessening its interest for English readers, it appeared feasible to take the most intimate and striking passages as a basis for a smaller volume.
