Excerpt from Dramatic Games and Dances: For Little Children As long as the dance was a decadent art, it could not be expected that it would at first be given serious attention as an art-form. Education is, however, beginning to follow the trend of the creative thought of the present, and the interest in the three united arts, the dance, music, and literature will cause them to develop, educationally, through their proper channels and in their related forms. The earlier classifications of the dramatic games have been - the form or manner of playing, the subject of the game, and the kinds of exercise for the body. Just to imagine studying dramatic literature under such an assortment of topics reveals the situation in which we find ourselves, educationally, in attempting to reinstate these earlier arts. Under the third heading - exercise of the body, the prize would surely go to comic opera because there is so much motor activity in that form. In attempting to present this small collection of dramatic games and dances built on another classification and for another purpose, there are several important points to be noted before the art-forms of the little child will have much significance for us. So long as we judged the child's art-product by adult standards, we were inclined to say that the little child was artless. Not until we hunted out the beginnings of highly evolved activities did we realize that the child is an artist at an early period of life. His constructive tendencies lead him to build in forms which differ from the most complex arts, in degree only. When we study what actions he puts together to build his plots; how this plot is whole and complete out of his experience; how yesterday's plot may not satisfy him today, because a new fact must be added to the older group, even though all the relations have to be changed to do 'it, we find that he is not far away from what we call a technical study of plot making. Excerpt from Games and Dances Increased attention to the physical welfare of children and adults, also the greatly increased number of playgrounds, has created a demand for a separate and enlarged edition of those activities of the Philadelphia Hand books of Lessons in Physical Training and Games, found under the headings of Games, song-plays, Dances and Roundels. The plan followed in the other books is also adhered to here, namely, the games and dances suitable for children or adults of each particular school-grade or age - group are printed together. This procedure places into the hands of a teacher a graded selection of tried and effective games and dances. The games and dances are arranged in nine progressive grades. Games marked (r) can be played in a room as well as in a playground. In an appendix a limited selection of quiet games and problems for hot weather is presented. This is followed by a list of track and field events which may be undertaken on the average playground, and by the records which the ordinary boy and girl should make. Then come seven compositions suited for mass drills on play days or field days. Lastly comes much valuable information relating to the space necessary for different kinds of play, to play courts, to the preparation playground teachers should have, to programs, salaries, etc., etc. Games and plays may be classified (a) into play activities upon stationary apparatus of various kinds, and (b) into play without stationary apparatus. Into the first group fall the playful activities upon the swinging and traveling rings, giant strides, swings, low horizontal bars, ladders, poles, teeter boards, and like forms of suitable play apparatus for children and adults. These are all forms of appliances upon which any one without gymnastic training and without the aid of a teacher of gymnastics or of play may amuse himself to his heart's content. While the more simple Folk Dances are easily within the ability of children of the Kindergarten age, their teaching involves a more or less irksome drill on the mechanism of the steps and the evolutions of the dances. By means of a carefully arranged preliminary training this rather tedious period of acquiring the necessary co-ordination can be made one of great pleasure to the children and comparatively easy teaching for the teacher. It is believed that the time spent on these simple games and rhythms will later prove very profitable. These little rhythmic Action Plays are presented to the public with the hope 1. That the small dancers, after having enjoyed these plays, will go on with spontaneous joy into the more advanced work, finding the transition to Folk and Aesthetic Dancing a natural and easy progression. 2. That the plays may prove of value to the teacher who finds "starting the children to dance" a difficult problem. 3. That they may help to fill the gap between the rhythmic work of the Kindergarten, which is frequently somewhat disconnected and lacking in progressive arrangement, and the more formal rhythmic work of the Physical Education Department.
