Hexachlorobenzene
Author: Canada. Environment Canada
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Environmental monitoring
Languages : en
Pages : 72
Book Description
CEPA requires the ministers of the Environment and of National Health and Welfare to prepare and publish a Priority Substances List that identifies substances, including chemicals, groups of chemicals, effluents and wastes that may be harmful to the environment or constitute a danger to human health. The assessment of whether hexachlorobenzene is toxic, as interpreted in CEPA, was based on the determination of whether it enters or likely enters the Canadian environment in a concentration or quantities or under conditions that could lead to exposure of humans or other biota at levels that could cause adverse effects. In this report, an overview of the findings is presented. An extended summary of technical information critical to the assessment is presented in Section 2. The assessment of whether HCB is toxic under CEPA is presented in Section 3.

Book Description
Information was developed in 1978 on hexachlorobenzene (HCB) with respect to its influence on human health and the environment inCanada. A further document on sources of HCB to the Canadianenvironment was compiled in 1979. The reports, collected in thisdocument, served as the background information for a decision in1979 by the Department of Environment/National Health and WelfareEnvironmental Contaminants Committee.

State of Knowledge Report on Environmental Contaminants and Human Health in the Great Lakes Basin
Author: Canada. Health Canada
Publisher: Environment Canada
ISBN:
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 382
Book Description
This report contains a detailed review of the literature on contaminants, exposure, and health effects of those contaminants in the Great Lakes basin. The report is based on a series of papers prepared for the Great Lakes Health Effects Program, and is supplemented by additional data from related studies. After an introduction on health concerns in the basin and an overview of priority contaminants (organochlorines, metals, radionuclides, microbes, and airborne contaminants), further sections of the review cover the following topics: adverse health effects of persistent environmental contaminants in fish and wildlife; biomarkers for exposure and health effects; human exposure to chemical contaminants and their health effects; reproductive and developmental effects; neurotoxicity; immunotoxic effects; cancer incidence in the basin; health effects associated with radionuclides; Great Lakes water quality and effects associated with microbial contaminants; air quality and associated respiratory health effects; and overall conclusions.

Reviews of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology
Author: George W. Ware
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461395291
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 163
Book Description
International concern in scientific, industrial, and governmental communi ties over traces of xenobiotics in foods and in both abiotic and biotic en vironments has justified the present triumvirate of specialized publications in this field: comprehensive reviews, rapidly published research papers and progress reports, and archival documentations. These three international publications are integrated and scheduled to provide the coherency essential for nonduplicative and current progress in a field as dynamic and complex as environmental contamination and toxicology. This series is reserved ex clusively for the diversified literature on "toxic" chemicals in our food, our feeds, our homes, recreational and working surroundings, our domestic an imals, our wildlife and ourselves. Tremendous efforts worldwide have been mobilized to evaluate the nature, presence, magnitude, fate, and toxicology of the chemicals loosed upon the earth. Among the sequelae of this broad new emphasis is an undeniable need for an articulated set of authoritative publications, where one can find the latest important world literature pro duced by these emerging areas of science together with documentation of pertinent ancillary legislation. Research directors and legislative or administrative advisers do not have the time to scan the escalating number of technical publications that may contain articles important to current responsibility. Rather, these individuals need the background provided by detailed reviews and the assurance that the latest information is made available to them, all with minimal literature searching.
