Book Description
Several national and international initiatives have encouraged the development of criteria and indicators to measure progress in sustainable development and sustainable forest management. This review is intended to introduce the forestry community to social indicators that have been used to document and monitor community sustainability and community well-being. Natural resource sociologists have been studying community stability for over half a century. Included is a discussion regarding selection criteria for social indicators that focuses on the advantages and disadvantages of qualitative and quantitative indicators. A review of several ongoing projects is included, and the appendix provides a quick reference for twenty-two indicator initiatives.

Book Description
A sustainable community, as understood by this research, is one that strives to maintain a health & thriving economy, society, & environment; adapts & responds to external & internal stresses & opportunities; provides a high quality of life for residents; and persists through time. This report describes five recent research projects identifying indicators of community sustainability in rural British Columbia. It develops a synthesis approach that combines elements from all five projects into an overarching framework for indicators research. More specifically, the framework organizes indicators derived from the projects into four basic types of capital: natural, economic, social, & human. It also identifies five specific outcomes: ecological integrity, economic vitality, civic vitality, physical & mental health, and recreational opportunities.

Book Description
Community managed forest systems embody a considerable portion of the wisdom, knowledge, and practical skills and management necessary for the sustainability of forest resources globally. These systems, however, are under threat in many ways, including from the rapid rate of change of their political, socio-economic, and biophysical contexts. Adapting forest management sufficiently quickly and effectively to meet these changes is both urgent and very challenging. This Guide introduces criteria and indicators of sustainability for community managed forest landscapes (CMF C&I) as a potential learning and communication tool that can help meet that challenge. It draws on CIFOR’s collaborative research on CMF C&I in Brazil, Indonesia, and Cameroon to propose a flexible step-by-step approach to developing and implementing self or collaborative forest monitoring systems, and gives examples of C&I developed by communities in these countries. The approach is targeted to communities and their partners in forest management, such as NGOs, government, or development projects, who are seeking strategies to improve local well-being and forest sustainability through more effective learning, collaboration, and decision-making in local forest management.

Book Description
Community indicators measuring systems represent a mechanism to improve monitoring and evaluation in planning, incorporating citizen involvement and participation. They reflect the interplay between social, environmental and economic factors affecting a region's or community's well-being, and, as such, can be extremely valuable to planners and developers. Yet, little research has been conducted on their efficacy. This book provides a comprehensive review of how community development indicators evolved and examines their interplay with planning and development. It questions how we adequately measure concepts associated with indicators systems and whether these systems are sustainable and can best evolve. In doing so, the book allows a better understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of community indicators measuring systems, as well as how best to design and implement them.
