In a majority of the cases both germination and purity determinations have been made indicating that well over 1000 separate indices to quality have been thus computed. As these tests are usually duplicated from two to five times in each in stance for the purpose of arriving at a suitable average and to eliminate any possible inconsistencies, the few official figures herewith presented hardly express the scope of the work. This bulletin shows the records of tests based on What we choose to call official samples. They represent the seeds collected by the State Department of Agri culture and tested by us for conformity with their printed guarantees. Persons interested in the State Seed Law will find it printed in last year's seed bulletin or may obtain copies by writing the State Department of Agriculture at Concord. Excerpt from Results of Seed Tests for 1919: Made for the State Department of Agriculture As previously noted only 388, or 48' per cent, of the total num ber of samples collected by the inspectors were guaranteed as to purity and germination. Last year per cent of the samples were guaranteed, while two years ago 84 per cent were guaranteed. These figures indicate an increasing tendency on the part of certain seed dealers to ignore the law. Of the samples which were guaranteed for purity, 90' per cent were found to be up to or above the guarantee; while of those which were guaranteed for germination only 67 per cent were found to be up to or above the guarantee. Last year the same percentages were 9-5 and respectively. With the exception of al-sike, red clover and timothy, all the various 'classes of seeds tested this year average slightly below the standard as regards purity. In the matter of germination all classes averaged! Up to the standard except alfalfa, buckwheat, millet, red clover, and white clover. Excerpt from Results of Seed Tests for 1917: Made for the State Department of Agriculture From the tables on the preceding pages it will be noted that 90 of the 103 samples collected were guaranteed for purity and 84 for germination. In other words, 87 per cent of the seed represented by the samples was sold according to the law as regards purity and 8-1 per cent as regards germination. These percentages are higher than last year, when they stood at 82 and 66 respectively. Of the total 90 samples which were guaranteed for purity, 85 of them, or 94 per cent, were found to be up to or above the guarantee. Excerpt from Results of Seed Tests for 1953: Made for the State Department of Agriculture Wholesalers are listed in alphabetical order except when samples are presumed to have been carried over, in which case they are listed alphabetically by dealers. The New Hampshire seed law requires that both agricultural and vegetable seeds must be labeled with the calendar month and year when last tested for germination, and requires that this germination test shall have been completed within nine months of being offered for sale. In the following tables, if the date of test was within the prescribed nine months, the sample is marked satisfactory, S in this respect; if no date was given, the word None appears indicating a violation; if the date was a violation of the law because the test was not made within nine months, the date given on the tag or label appears in that column. The first part of the report deals with 160 samples of agricultural seed tested for purity, germination and noxious weed content. There is a tolerance or allowable variation from the guarantee for both purity and germination, in accordance with the Rules for Seed Testing adopted by the Association of Official Seed Analysts, so that, for instance a sample of timothy guaranteed for purity and 85 for germination could test as low as 98.25'7o for purity and 77 for germination and be satisfactory. If a sample when tested for purity falls within the allow able variation, it is marked S (satisfactory) if below the allowable variation, and therefore a violation, the actual figure found for purity is given.
