Reservoirs and Induced Seismicity at Corps of Engineers Projects

Book Description
A review was made of major reservoirs of the Corps of Engineers with regard to their experiences with induced seismicity. The Corps has 24 large reservoirs, i.e. those with dams 60.96 m (200 ft) in height or greater, and with volumes of 1,233,500,000 cu m (1,000,000 acre-ft) or greater. Thirteen reservoirs were instrumented for monitoring microearthquakes. They range from large to small and are located in aseismic to highly seismic areas. Only one Corps reservoir, Clark Hill in Georgia-South Carolina, has experienced a felt earthquake, but the 21-year interval between impoundment and the occurrence of the earthquake is not typical of reservoir-induced earthquakes and a direct relationship appears improbable.

Microearthquake Monitoring at Corps of Engineers Facilities
Author: David M. Patrick
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Reservoirs
Languages : en
Pages : 98
Book Description
Awareness of potential seismicity induced by the filling of large reservoirs or by the injection of fluids in boreholes has prompted the Corps of Engineers and others to conduct microseismic monitoring programs at ten damsites and at one injection well. Two other damsites have been monitored by other organizations in cooperation with the Corps of Engineers and one is proposed. These programs were developed to measure and compare ambient seismicity in the environs of the installations and the seismicity present during either reservoir filling or fluid injection.

Microearthquake Monitoring Sponsored by the Corps of Engineers

Book Description
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (CE) has monitored microearthquake activity near selected projects to enhance seismic safety. Ten monitoring programs were completed. Six programs are in progress. Thirteen of the programs were initiated to document induced seismicity. The three remaining programs were intended to examine microearthquake activity in areas of known or suspected active faulting. The programs have been operated by contractors, such as the U.S. Geological Survey and various universities. The CE Districts, Seattle and Huntington, are operating programs directly. The programs documenting induced seismicity have shown that CE projects have little or no local seismic activity. The programs have measured ambient microearthquake activity at reservoir sites before filling and have recorded activity for several years after filling. Programs have been completed at one injection well and seven reservoir projects. Only four of the ten completed programs ran their full intended course. In some cases, the projects were deauthorized or transferred out of CE control. Five programs are in progress at reservoir sites (or proposed sites).
