Book Description
Excerpt from The Measurement of Emotion On the purely theoretical side, his distinction of positive tone and negative tone, in relation to the influence of feeling upon memory (power of recall), is a helpful one. The distinction is based upon the experimentally ascertained fact that a word which evokes well-marked afiective tone may be better remembered than a less intensely toned word or may be forgotten more quickly. Its significance in relation to the general problem of repression is discussed in an interesting way. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Origin and Nature of the Emotions: Miscellaneous Papers In response to numerous requests I have brought together into this volume eight papers which may serve as a supplement to the volumes previously published and as a preface to monographs now in preparation. In the first of these addresses, the Ether Day Address, delivered at the Massachusetts General Hospital in October, 1910, I first enunciated the Kinetic Theory of Shock, the key to which was found in laboratory researches and in a study of Darwin's "Expression of the Emotions in Man and in Animals," whereby the phylogenetic origin of the emotions was made manifest and the pathologic identity of surgical and emotional shock was established. Since 1910 my associates and I have continued our researches through - (a) Histologic studies of all the organs and tissues of the body; (b) Estimation of the H-ion concentration of the blood in the emotions of anger and fear and after the application of many other forms of stimuli; (c) Functional tests of the adrenals, and (d) Clinical observations. It would seem that if the striking changes produced by fear and anger and by physical trauma in the master organ of the body - the brain - were due to work, then we should expect to find corresponding histologic changes in other organs of the body as well. Book Description
The Psychology of the Emotions is an examination of the emotions that form the vary basis of being human. It was authored by French psychologist Theodule-Armand Ribot, best known for his work on retrograde amnesia. Ribot also wrote extensively about human emotions, with a particular focus on the physical aspects of emotions. The Psychology of the Emotions begins by examining the two most pervasive schools of thought relating to human emotions at the time of Ribot's writing. The author details both the intellectualist thesis, which states that emotions are part and parcel of human intelligence, and the physiological thesis, which states that emotions are primitive, instinctual, and exist separate from the thinking mind. While Ribot does not fully subscribe to either of these theories, he borrows elements from both. The book is divided into two major sections, with the first section examining emotions and their broad manifestations: happiness and pain and the everyday feeling of humans. Part two details what the writer refers to as "special emotions," more complex feelings that Ribot attempts to trace to their very origin within the brain. The Psychology of the Emotions is a well researched and concisely presented examination of human emotions - Hardly a surprise as Theodule-Armand Ribot continues to be considered one of the foremost researchers into human emotions, and this title is perhaps his most significant work on the subject. Readers seeking a detailed examination of emotions and their manifestations are encouraged to add The Psychology of the Emotions to their library. Book Description
Excerpt from The Nature of Emotion: A Thesis As this imaginary individual would be destitute of all malev olent feeling, he would likewise be incapable of affection or gratitude. If he were agreeably affected by one of his fellows, he might cognize the pleasure-giving agent as a worthy kind of being, and return the favor from a sense of justice, or with a View to future benefits. His action, however, would not be prompted by any kindly disposition towards the individual con cerned. He would regard the latter in a purely intellectual manner as a series of sensations involving, according to all probability, a personality like himself - a personality which has been the means of causing him enjoyment. On the other hand, he would turn on himself the same cold, cognitive gaze. His actions would give him pleasure if they harmonized with his interests or ideals, but there would be no responsive pride or self-complacency.
