Excerpt from Report of the Class of 1858 of Harvard College: Prepared for the Fortieth Anniversary of Its Graduation Henry adams - Born in Boston, Feb. 16, 1838; son of Charles Francis and Abigail (brooks) Adams. He sailed for Europe in October, 1858, and passed two years in Germany, Italy, and France. Returning to America in November, 1860, he spent the winter in Washington as private secretary to his father, then a member of the House of Representatives. In 1861, Mr. Adams was appointed Minister to the Court of St. James; and the family removed to England in May, where they remained until they returned to Boston in July, 1868. After his return from Europe, he Spent two years in Washington. He was appointed Assistant Professor of History in Harvard College, in September, 1870, and about the same time assumed the editorship of the North American Review. He ceased to edit this in 1876, and resigned his professorship in June, 1877. He married, June 27, 1872, Marion, daughter of Dr. Robert W. Hooper, of Boston. He published Chapters of Erie, and other Essays, in connection with his brother, Charles F. Adams, in 1871; Essays in Anglo - Saxon Law, in 1876; New England Federalism, in 1877; Life of Albert Gallatin, in 1880; and Life of John Randolph, in 1882. Mrs. Adams died at Washington, Dec. 6, 1885. June 3, 1886, he started for Japan with John La Farge, whose letters describing their journey have been published. They returned in November. Published History of the United States under the Admin istrations of Jefferson and Madison, in nine volumes, 1888 90. (loubat Prize, Also in 18goa volume of col lected Essays. Started in the summer of 1890 with John La Farge for the South Seas, where they remained a year at Samoa, Tahiti, Fiji, etc., returning by way of Europe in February, 1892. Since 1890 has published nothing, exceptan address as retiring President of the American Historical Association in 1895. He is a member of the Massachusetts Historical Society, and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Owing to frequent and long absences, he has seldom been able to attend class meetings. He wrote, April 22, 1898, from Athens, 1 go up to Bucharest, Sofia, and Belgrade to - morrow, via Constantinople Address, 1603 H Street, Washington, D. C.
