Excerpt: ...or enlarged tonsils I2 per cent have defective vision serious enough to require glasses 5 per cent have seriously defective hearing I2 per 20 per 6 per 5 per 2 per cent indicate defective nutrition cent have been infected at some time with tuberculosis cent have nervous diseases cent have orthopedic defects cent have cardiac disease In order to check up the above estimates as to the frequency with which defects occur, the committee tested the vision and hearing of 290 children selected at random from the fourth and fifth grades in the five districts having a superintendent of schools. For the vision tests, the Snellen charts were employed. In testing the hearing, acoumeter and stop watch tests were made. Of the 290 children tested, 41 or 14.1 per cent showed defects so serious as to warrant consultation with an oculist, while only 4 of these children were wearing glasses. Nineteen or 6.6 per cent of the 290 had seriously defective hearing. The following tabular statement of the test results is given not as an exact representation of the full condition in Nassau county, but as a sampling from five of the larger districts which, taken in connection with the table given above, may possibly tend to confirm our estimates of the frequency of various defects. It ought always to be possible for the medical officer to require that unsanitary conditions be remedied in any school building as soon as discovered, but the present method of appointing medical inspectors is very unsatisfactory as a means of providing sanitary inspection.
