In previous work, the contractor has developed a portable sensor (Airtec) for monitoring Elemental Carbon (EC) levels in ambient air. This was done to support CDCP efforts to quantify and improve the air quality in underground mining operations. Pre-existing technology, namely the 5040, enabled EC measurements to be made, but these required laboratory analysis and thus did not provide any real-time feedback. With the development of Airtec we were able to provide live measurements to the user with integration times of minutes, not entire work shifts, so it served not as a shift-long dosimeter but as a real-time environmental reading. This type of data enabled users to make immediate changes to their working conditions and receive real feedback in terms of their impact on air quality. For example, leaks in vehicle cabs were detected and corrected using Airtec measurements. . . . the project described herein which focused on developing a version of Airtec which could be mounted in the mine and would report air conditions to a remote monitoring location. It was envisioned that data recorded from a suite of such sensors, strategically located, would enable monitoring of air quality throughout the mine and possibly the adjustment of air handling systems to manage the EC concentration in real-time.
