Book Description
Although there are educational benefits resulting from participation in sports, African American students do not always experience positive outcomes. The purpose of this causal comparative study was to investigate the effect of athletic participation on the academic achievement of African American high school male students. Descriptive statistics and archival data, consisting of grade point averages and ACT scores of student-athletes and non-athletes from six high schools in a large urban public school, were collected and analyzed. Results indicated there were no statistically significant differences between the grade point averages and ACT scores of student-athletes and non-athletes. Findings suggested opportunities to participate in athletics should be offered to all high school students. Recommendations for future research have been provided.

Book Description
"The purpose of this project was to compare the academic performance of high school athletes vs. non-athletes using grade point average and ACT scores. Using information from the Kansas State Department of Education, as well as the Kansas State High School Activities Association, provides some answers to the following questions. "Is there a significant difference in the grade point averages of high school athletes vs. non-athletes?" "Is there a significant difference in ACT scores between high school athletes vs. non-athletes?" Using statistical software, a t-test was used to challenge the null hypothesis. Findings from the study indicated that there was a significant difference in grade point average and ACT scores between athletes and non-athletes. Among the 5,017 male athletes, 74% reported a GPA of 3.0 or higher and 43% reported a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Of the 3,674 male non-athletes, only 64% reported a GPA of 3.0 or higher and only 34% reported a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Among the 4,330 female athletes, 87% reported a GPA of 3.0 or higher and 62% reported a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Of the 5,547 female non-athletes, only 75% reported a GPA of 3.0 or higher and only 44% reported a GPA of 3.5 or higher. In looking at ACT composite scores, athletes averaged a score of 22.94, while non-athletes averaged a score of 21.81."

Book Description
ABSTRACT The purpose of this case study was to investigate the relationship between participation in high school athletics and the performance at a local Christian high school in three specific areas, grades, behavior, and physical activity. This research is intended to provide a better understanding of the relationship between high school athletes and non-athletes. The findings in this case study statically demonstrated that there was a positive relationship between interscholastic sports participation and academic performance in each of these three areas. Through independent two samples t-test analysis of 287 ninth through twelfth-grade students at a local Christian high school, it was determined that the students who participated in interscholastic sports had higher grade point averages (GPA), fewer discipline points, and greater physical activity. Microsoft Excel and Minitab Express, a statistical program, was used to analyze the data that was provided by the Christian high school. An interesting finding was that females had fewer discipline points whether they participated in interscholastic athletics or not. Based on the research conducted it is clear that athletes outperform their non-athlete counterparts in all three areas. In a time when schools are being forced to cut so-called unessential programs and services, it is recommended that policy considerations be made for local funding to include extracurricular sports as a viable method to increase student performance.

Book Description
In Reclaiming the Game, William Bowen and Sarah Levin disentangle the admissions and academic experiences of recruited athletes, walk-on athletes, and other students. In a field overwhelmed by reliance on anecdotes, the factual findings are striking--and sobering. Anyone seriously concerned about higher education will find it hard to wish away the evidence that athletic recruitment is problematic even at those schools that do not offer athletic scholarships. Thanks to an expansion of the College and Beyond database that resulted in the highly influential studies The Shape of the River and The Game of Life, the authors are able to analyze in great detail the backgrounds, academic qualifications, and college outcomes of athletes and their classmates at thirty-three academically selective colleges and universities that do not offer athletic scholarships. They show that recruited athletes at these schools are as much as four times more likely to gain admission than are other applicants with similar academic credentials. The data also demonstrate that the typical recruit is substantially more likely to end up in the bottom third of the college class than is either the typical walk-on or the student who does not play college sports. Even more troubling is the dramatic evidence that recruited athletes "underperform:" they do even less well academically than predicted by their test scores and high school grades. Over the last four decades, the athletic-academic divide on elite campuses has widened substantially. This book examines the forces that have been driving this process and presents concrete proposals for reform. At its core, Reclaiming the Game is an argument for re-establishing athletics as a means of fulfilling--instead of undermining--the educational missions of our colleges and universities.
