Recordar y narrar el exilio supone como punto de partida reconocer la deuda histórica que tiene la sociedad y el Estado colombiano con las víctimas que se vieron forzadas a salir del país como consecuencia del conflicto armado y la violencia generalizada. A partir de su reconocimiento, las herramientas aquí descritas permiten interpelar las naturalizaciones y justificaciones que han contribuido a invisibilizar el exilio colombiano en sus diferentes manifestaciones. Al escuchar las voces de las personas que han vivido la experiencia del exilio, es posible rescatar una parte de la memoria histórica del conflicto armado colombiano que no ha sido contada en el país y que debe integrarse a la memoria colectiva para resignificarla. Sin embargo, las memorias de estos procesos no se agotan en la experiencia del exilio, sino que se enriquecen con las circunstancias que preceden y acompañan el éxodo, así como las circunstancias que suceden en los casos de retorno. Este material ofrece herramientas conceptuales, metodológicas, éticas y psicosociales capaces de reconocer la pluralidad de memorias del exilio, en distintos contextos geopolíticos, que a su vez reflejan la pluralidad de las voces en la sociedad y la institucionalidad colombiana. Conventional wisdom portrays war zones as chaotic and anarchic. In reality, however, they are often orderly. This work introduces a new phenomenon in the study of civil war: wartime social order. It investigates theoretically and empirically the emergence and functioning of social order in conflict zones. By theorizing the interaction between combatants and civilians and how they impact wartime institutions, the study delves into rebel behavior, civilian agency and their impact on the conduct of war. Based on years of fieldwork in Colombia, the theory is tested with qualitative and quantitative evidence on communities, armed groups, and individuals in conflict zones. The study shows how armed groups strive to rule civilians, and how the latter influence the terms of that rule. The theory and empirical results illuminate our understanding of civil war, institutions, local governance, non-violent resistance, and the emergence of political order.

Throughout Latin America, the idea of "justice" serves as the ultimate goal and rationale for a wide variety of actions and causes. In the Chilean Atacama Desert, residents have undertaken a prolonged struggle for their right to groundwater. Family members of bombing victims in Buenos Aires demand that the state provide justice for the attack. In Colombia, some victims of political violence have turned to the courts for resolution, while others reject the state's ability to fairly adjudicate their grievances and have constructed a non-state tribunal. In each of these examples, the protagonists seek one main thing: justice. A Sense of Justice ethnographically explores the complex dynamics of justice production across Latin America. The chapters examine (in)justice as it is lived and imagined today and what it means for those who claim and regulate its parameters, including the Brazilian police force, the Permanent Peoples' Tribunal in Colombia, and the Argentine Supreme Court. The signing of the peace agreements between the FARC-EP and the Colombian Government in late November 2016 has generated new prospects for peace in Colombia, opening the possibility of redressing the harm inflicted on Colombians by Colombians. Talking about peace and transitional justice requires us to think about how to operationalize peace agreements to promote justice and coexistence for peace. This volume brings together reflections by Colombian academics and practitioners alongside pieces provided by researchers and practitioners in other countries where transitional justice initiatives have taken place (Bosnia and Herzegovina, South Africa, Sri Lanka and Peru).
