Second Harmonic Electron Cyclotron Heating Calculations for the ATF (Advanced Toroidal Facility) Torsatron

Book Description
The heating of the Advanced Toroidal Facility now under construction at Oak Ridge National Laboratory has been investigated using ray tracing techniques. The effect of electron cyclotron waves at the second harmonic resonance is studied using the RAYS geometrical optics code assuming anticipated steady state parameters. A comparison is made of the heating efficiency using two launching schemes: a linearly polarized antenna providing a narrow beam and a T E02 waveguide. The first pass ray tracing calculations are incorporated in a wall reflection/power balance model which includes the effects of wall reflected rays and wall losses. It is shown that the power absorbed in the plasma after multiple reflections is preferentially absorbed near the center of the plasma. A significant fraction of the incident power is predicted to ultimately be deposited in the plasma, rather than lost to walls and ports.

Electron Cyclotron Heating and Current Drive in Toroidal Geometry
Author:
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 16
Book Description
The Principal Investigator has continued to work on problems associated both with the deposition and with the emission of electron cyclotron heating power electron cyclotron heating in toroidal plasmas. Inparticular, the work has focused on the use of electron cyclotron heating to stabilize q = 1 and q = 2 instabilities in tokamaks and on the use of electron cyclotron emission as a plasma diagnostic. The research described in this report has been carried out in collaboration with scientists at Princeton, MIT and Livermore. The Principal Investigator is now employed at Lehigh University, and a small group effort on electron cyclotron heating in plasmas has begun to evolve at Lehigh involving undergraduate and graduate students. Work has also been done in support of the electron cyclotron heating and current drive program at the Center for Research in Plasma Physics in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Electron Cyclotron Emission And Electron Cyclotron Resonance Heating (Ec-16) - Proceedings Of The 16th Joint Workshop (With Cd-rom)
Author: Ronald Prater
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9814462063
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 427
Book Description
This proceedings volume, the sixteenth in a biannual series, presents a snapshot of the state of current research worldwide on Electron Cyclotron Emission (ECE) and Electron Cyclotron Resonance Heating (ECRH) and related technologies. The papers address the physics, both theory and experiment, of ECE and ECRH. The technologies of high power millimeter-wave sources — gyrotrons — and transmission lines and launchers are included. The focus is on physics and technology relevant to the research and development of nuclear fusion.
