This book describes hazards from radon progeny and other alpha-emitters that humans may inhale or ingest from their environment. In their analysis, the authors summarize in one document clinical and epidemiological evidence, the results of animal studies, research on alpha-particle damage at the cellular level, metabolic pathways for internal alpha-emitters, dosimetry and microdosimetry of radionuclides deposited in specific tissues, and the chemical toxicity of some low-specific-activity alpha-emitters. A seminar on radon risks had the following objectives: to review Canadian research relating to the risks of radon daughter inhalation; to communicate Canadian data relevant to radon daughter exposure limits; to assess importance of recent research in this area; and to review existing technology for making radon daughter measurements, the most appropriate parameters to evaluate, and the facilities available in Canada for standardization and intercomparisons of radon-related measurements. This document presents the proceedings of the seminar, including presentations on such subjects as occupational exposures to radon daughters, residential radon and lung cancer in Winnipeg, risk estimates for inhalation of short-lived radon progeny, radon daughter risks in uranium mining, the national radon/thoron test facility, and regulatory implications of International Commission on Radiological Protection recommendations regarding radon progeny.
