Québec is confirming its ambition to take the lead in sustainable development on the continent with the release of its 2006-2012 climate change action plan, entitled Québec and climate change--a challenge for the future. The action plan sets forth precise targets and identifies the initiatives undertaken to meet the 2012 Kyoto Protocol objectives. This plan is composed of 24 actions that are based on two major objectives: the reduction or avoiding of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and adaptation to climate change. Actions to reduce GHG emissions pertain to energy, transportation, residual materials, agriculture and government operations. They also consist in raising public awareness and supporting technological innovation. Adaptation actions concern health, environment, resources and the territory. For each sector, the government presents the actions currently in place to reduce or avoid GHG emissions, followed by a set of additional actions (see appendix) it intends to implement between 2006 and 2012.--Document.
