Book Description
Excerpt from Public Health and Preventive Medicine Taking into consideration the main object of the volume, and in the endeavour to secure the utmost compression, it has been decided to exclude what would be a very lengthy bibliography, though the names of authorities are frequently quoted. N o attempt has been made to deal fully with laboratory work, but as some reference to it was absolutely necessary, the rationale of the various processes has in each instance been given, and, we believe, will be found useful by the student in the way of recalling his practical work and refreshing his memory. Our thanks are due to all those whose writings have aided us, and also to those who in other ways have rendered us assistance. We are specially indebted to Dr. Harvey Littlejohn for much kind advice, criticism, and the loan of literature on various branches. Book Description
Excerpt from An Introduction to the Practice of Preventive Medicine The banner Province of the Dominion of Canada, Ontario, now spends about 2 per cent of its total revenue in this way. The capital city of that Province, Toronto, does likewise. The motto of the New York State Department of Health is: Public Health is purchasable; within natural limitations any community can deter mine its own death rate. This motto is being literally applied in these, as in many other places. It is probable that in a short time no province, state or municipality will be found wanting in this important matter. Book Description
Excerpt from Transactions of the Section on Preventive Medicine and Public Health The colonial period brought forth an attempt on the part of the various ports and cities to exclude and eradicate pestilential disease. This was a local, nu organized, and non-uniform movement, too often influenced by commercial motives and civic pride, but the seed of preventive medicine thus sown took root, and one of the first bills introduced into the First Congress of the United States provided for the assump tion of the quarantine power by the federal govern ment. But the time was not ripe, and we passed through a long period of state and local quarantine, and not a few devastating epidemics, before the citizen ship had evolved to the point where it would impose these duties on the general government. Even then we were unprepared for the step, and the short-lived national Board of Health came and went, but not before it had touched with prophetic finger the heart of the problem of the public health, the state and local boards of health. In a republic where the right to govern rests on the consent of the governed, where public senti ment very largely influences the enforcement of sanitary law, where people think before they obey, the comer stone of the whole public health fabric is the state board of health, and its efficiency determines in large measure the efficiency of the whole. Coincident with the development of the state boards came the improvement of the federal health agencies. The national Board of Health was a de new creation springing fully formed from the brains of a number of the most brilliant and public-spirited medical men of their time. The principle on which it was founded. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Preventive Medicine and Hygiene This book has been written in response to a demand for a treatise based upon modern progress in hygiene and sanitation. The work is planned to include those fields of the medical and related sciences which form the foundation of public health work. So far as I know, no other book on the subject covers the broad field considered in this volume. The progress in hygiene and sanitation has been so rapid that the subject of preventive medicine has become a specialty, and its scope has become so broad that the question throughout the making of this book has been rather what to leave out than what to include. The facts here brought together are widely scattered in the literature and many of them are difficult of access; they have been collected for the convenience of the student of medicine and the physician, as well as those engaged in sanitary engineering or public health work. During twenty-three years of varied experience in public health work it has been my good fortune to have served as quarantine officer, in epidemic campaigns, in epidemiological investigations, and in public health laboratories, at home, on the Continent, and in the tropics. The fruits of these experiences are reflected in this book, which may be taken as representing my personal views gained in the field, in the laboratory, in the classroom, and in administrative offices.
