Book Description
Excerpt from A Progressive Course in English Literature Composition IN this volume an attempt has been made to bring into close natural relations elementary work in litera ture and composition. The primary principles of rhetoric have been developed inductively, and applied immediately to the work in literature and composi tion. As in the other books of this series, as much opportunity as possible has been given to the pupil for the cultivation of his powers of self-discovery and self-expression. It has also been the aim of the writer to make this, in reality, a progressive course in English. Not only does the subject-matter proceed from the simple to the complex in the order of the subjects treated; but in the treatment of the various subjects, the advance ment goes forward a single step at a time. Funda mental elements are treated first in every case, suggestive helps being given until such time as the pupil should be able to do without them. This makes it possible for the teacher to omit any chapter or to take any chapter in an order different from that of the book, if he so desires. Book Description
Excerpt from The Progressive Course in Spelling, Vol. 1 IN recent years the study of English has received more attention in high schools and colleges than ever before. In some public schools, however, there has been a tendency to neglect or slight such fundamental phases of English work as spelling and pronunciation by making them simply inci dental to other studies. As a result, business men who em ploy pupils from the grammar-school grades find many poorly equipped in spelling, and high-school instructors complain that many students, for the same cause, are not well prepared for their work. The Progressive Course in Spelling has been prepared with the hope that its use would awaken an interest in and encourage the study of words. Attention is invited to the grading and grouping of its contents. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Progressive Studies in English This book is a text-book written for learners, not for the learned. It is suggestive only, and is so planned that the teacher shall not be hampered by excessive de mands on his limited time, or the student prevented from taking the initiative. The student comes to us with habits formed, and it is our function as teachers to prove to him by example and rule that his oral or written speech is poorly constructed, and that there is a right way to build language, even as there is a right way to build a house. Book Description
Excerpt from The Progressive Course in Reading, Vol. 1: Fourth Book; Part I; Information Literature Oral Expression The ability to cognize printed symbols lies at the very foundation of the ability to read either silently or orally. Therefore, the first four books of The Progressive Course in Reading provide for the systematic study of each word used, both singly and in its relations to other words. For this purpose, each printed symbol is registered in connection with the lesson in which it first occurs, and numerous special exercises familiarize the pupil with the literal and phonetic analogies of our language, and so cultivate his power of translating the printed symbol into the spoken word. Book Description
Excerpt from The Progressive Course in Reading, Vol. 5: Part I. Information, Literature, Oral Expression IN the preparation of The Progressive Course in Readin g, the compilers have kept steadily in view certain results which, in their judgment, should be aimed at by every teacher of reading, viz.: com mand of the art of reading, both silent and oral, a love for the best reading material, and the establishment of the reading habit. To secure the first of these results is the all-important problem of the earliest school years, and it is believed that the first three books of this series will be found well adapted to the end desired. Book Description
Excerpt from A Progressive Course in English for Secondary Schools: Literature Composition; Rhetoric Grammar In the present work an attempt has been made to bring into as dose natural relations as possible, for first year pupils of secondary schools, the work in literature, composition and rhetoric and grammar. In this undertaking certain principles based upon the needs and interests of the pupil have been kept constantly in mind. 1. The author's experience has led him to believe that, in the main, the pupil has been told too much; he is surfeited with instruction. Too little scope has been allowed him for the exercise of his powers of discovery and application. The first aim, therefore, of this book is to lead the pupil to do for himself rather than to learn "what it were good to do." A child could hardly learn to walk by sitting tied in a chair, observing the motions of other people. Neither will a pupil ever come to use language correctly and effectively, by studying rules and definitions. Consequently, in the following pages, study ind practice of an inductive nature usually precede definitions. 2. The study of composition and rhetoric is too often disassociated from the life of the pupil. It is a seemingly natural tendency for teachers, under the pressure of work and the demands of school routine, to make the study a formal thing.
