Book Description
Therapeutic hypothermia has emerged as a very important treatment option for patients with cardiac arrest as it provides significant protection from developing neurologic injury once the patient has been successfully resuscitated. Studies have demonstrated over 15% absolute risk reduction in death and neurologic injury using this therapy. Although hospitals and medical centers have become familiar with this important intervention it still remains greatly under utilized due to an experience and lack of resources to safely and effectively deploy such a program. The objective of this book is to educate and familiarize both providers and institutions as to how to develop and deploy and provide therapeutic hypothermia to their patients. The current knowledge for this is provided by speakers and national experts and also by literature review. There are several courses being provided on this as well throughout the US. These are good venues for people to come and see and get hands on experience, but there still needs to be a concrete book with references on how to go about getting this program started.

Book Description
Rapid progress in technology and its application to diagnosis and monitoring of brain tissue temperature and metabolism have resulted in advances in the therapy for critically brain-injured patients and breakthroughs in understanding the pathophysiology of brain damage. The latest concept of brain hypothermia therapy clarifies targets such as brain thermal pooling, masking brain hypoxia associated with catecholamine surge, the metabolic shift from glucose to lipids, and selective radical damage of dopamine in the central nervous system. This volume explains the mechanism of brain injury and how brain hypothermia treatment differs from other hypothermia therapy in four major sections: Brain Injury Mechanism, Pathophysiology of Hypothermia, Basic Research of Hypothermia Treatment, and Clinical Studies of Brain Hypothermia. The book is a valuable source for practitioners and researchers in neurosurgery and neurology and in critical care and emergency medicine.

Book Description
Cardiac arrest can strike a seemingly healthy individual of any age, race, ethnicity, or gender at any time in any location, often without warning. Cardiac arrest is the third leading cause of death in the United States, following cancer and heart disease. Four out of five cardiac arrests occur in the home, and more than 90 percent of individuals with cardiac arrest die before reaching the hospital. First and foremost, cardiac arrest treatment is a community issue - local resources and personnel must provide appropriate, high-quality care to save the life of a community member. Time between onset of arrest and provision of care is fundamental, and shortening this time is one of the best ways to reduce the risk of death and disability from cardiac arrest. Specific actions can be implemented now to decrease this time, and recent advances in science could lead to new discoveries in the causes of, and treatments for, cardiac arrest. However, specific barriers must first be addressed. Strategies to Improve Cardiac Arrest Survival examines the complete system of response to cardiac arrest in the United States and identifies opportunities within existing and new treatments, strategies, and research that promise to improve the survival and recovery of patients. The recommendations of Strategies to Improve Cardiac Arrest Survival provide high-priority actions to advance the field as a whole. This report will help citizens, government agencies, and private industry to improve health outcomes from sudden cardiac arrest across the United States.

Book Description
The EEG is a simple and widely available neurophysiological test that, if interpreted correctly, can provide valuable insight into the functioning of the brain. However, despite its increasing usage in a range of settings, there is a common misconception that the EEG is inherently difficult to interpret. Compounding the problem is the lack of dedicated training and no standardized approach by encephalographers. This book provides a clear and concise guide to reading and interpreting EEGs in a systematic way. Presented in three sections, the first delivers foundational technical knowledge of how EEGs work, and the second concentrates on a comprehensive, stepwise approach to reading and interpreting an EEG. The third section contains examples of EEGs in common scenarios, such as seizures and post-cardiac arrest, enabling readers to correlate their findings to clinical indications. Heavily illustrated with over 200 example EEGs, this is an essential pocket guide to interpreting these tests.

Core Topics in Neuroanesthesia and Neurointensive Care is an authoritative and practical clinical text that offers clear diagnostic and management guidance for a wide range of neuroanesthesia and neurocritical care problems. With coverage of every aspect of the discipline by outstanding world experts, this should be the first book to which practitioners turn for easily accessible and definitive advice. Initial sections cover relevant anatomy, physiology and pharmacology, intraoperative and critical care monitoring and neuroimaging. These are followed by detailed sections covering all aspects of neuroanesthesia and neurointensive care in both adult and pediatric patients. The final chapter discusses ethical and legal issues. Each chapter delivers a state-of-the art review of clinical practice, including outcome data when available. Book Description
The common and unfortunate complication after cardiac arrest is hypoxic-brain injury, which leads to devastating neurological complication. There are only 7% to 30% of the patient, discharged at home with good neurological outcome, who were admitted after cardiac arrest. The initial emergency treatment of stabilizing the heart and the intensive care unit (ICU) management to treat the underline cause of the cardiac arrest are still not resulting in improved neurological outcome or decrease mortality rate in post cardiac arrest patient. The induction of therapeutic hypothermia (TH) of 32 ?C ' 34 ?C in ICU within 3-4 hours for 24 hour and then rewarm slowly at temperature of 0.3- 0.5 ?C every hour, with injunction of the other care management and treatment for post cardiac arrest patient. Evidences has suggested that therapeutic hypothermia can provide cerebral neuro-protective benefits in post cardiac patients even with different methods of hypothermia induction. The treatment process to desired outcome requires close monitoring of the patient, competent nurses with knowledge and skills of the treatment. The therapeutic hypothermia is concurrently implemented in hospitals for the short term and long term patient quality patient care outcome. Since 2007, the year hypothermia was included in treatment plan for post cardiac arrest by different hospitals, the mortality rate of these hospital has significantly decreased and the neurologic disability also decreased among the survivors overtime.
