Book Description
The technology-thwarting car thief has become as advanced as the cars themselves. As early as 1910 Americans recognized that cars were easy to steal and, once stolen, hard to find, especially since cars looked much alike. Model styles and colors eventually changed, but so did the means of making a stolen car disappear. Though changing license plates and serial numbers remain basic procedure, thieves have created highly sophisticated networks to disassemble stolen vehicles, distribute the parts, and/or ship the altered cars out of the country. Stealing cars has become as technologically advanced as the cars themselves. John A. Heitmann and Rebecca H. Morales’s study of automobile theft and culture examines a wide range of related topics that includes motives and methods, technological deterrents, place and space, institutional responses, international borders, and cultural reflections. Only recently have scholars begun to move their focus away from the creators and manufacturers of the automobile to its users. Stealing Cars illustrates the power of this approach, as it aims at developing a better understanding of the place of the automobile in the broad texture of American life. There are many who are fascinated by aspects of automobile history, but many more readers enjoy the topic of crime—motives, methods, escaping capture, and of course solving the crime and bringing criminals to justice. Stealing Cars brings together expertise from the history of technology and cultural history as well as city planning and transborder studies to produce a compelling and detailed work that raises questions concerning American priorities and values. Drawing on sources that include interviews, government documents, patents, sociological and psychological studies, magazines, monographs, scholarly periodicals, film, fiction, and digital gaming, Heitmann and Morales tell a story that highlights both human creativity and some of the paradoxes of American life.

Book Description
Social deviance—any behavior that violates a cultural norm—can involve something as major as crime or as minor as consistently and deliberately wearing lively mismatched socks. Whether a crime, a sin, or simply unique taste, what’s considered deviant at one time and place can change, as when extensive tattooing and "body art" evolved from a sideshow carnival spectacle to a nearly universal rite of passage within U.S. culture. Drawing contributions from across the social and behavioral sciences, including sociology, anthropology, criminology, politics, psychology, and religion, the Encyclopedia of Social Deviance introduces readers to the lively field of rule-making and rebellion that strikes at the core of what it means to be an individual living in a social world. Key Features: More than 300 articles authored by key figures in the field are organized A-to-Z in two volumes. Each article concludes with cross-references to related entries and further readings. A thematic "Reader’s Guide" groups related articles by broad areas (e.g., Concepts; Theories; Research Methodologies; Individual Deviance; Organizational Deviance; etc.) as one handy search feature on the e-Reference platform, which also includes a comprehensive index of search terms. Available in both electronic and print formats, this two-volume, A-to-Z encyclopedia set is a must-have resource for students and researchers who seek to understand social deviance. Key Themes: Crime, Property Crime, Sex Crime, Violent Crime, White-Collar/Corporate Defining Deviance Deviance in Social Institutions Deviant Subcultures Discrimination Drug Use and Abuse Marriage and Family Deviance Measuring Deviance Mental and Physical Disabilities Methodology for Studying Deviance Self-Destructive Deviance Sexual Deviance Social and Political Protest Social Control and Deviance Studying Deviant Subcultures Technology and Deviance Theories of Deviance, Macro Theories of Deviance, Micro Transitional Deviance

Book Description
"This Handbook has been prepared to assist federal prosecutors and investigators, and others with federal criminal justice responsibilities, in their review and implementation of the Comprehensive Crime Control Act of 1984 (Public Law 98-473) and ten other recently enacted criminal statutes. The Comprehensive Crime Control Act contains the most significant series of changes in the federal criminal justice system ever enacted at one time. Implementation of the Act, and of the other criminal statutes enacted by the 98th Congress, will constitute a major step toward establishing a fair and sensible balance in that system between the rights of the public as a whole and the rights of criminal defendants"--Preface.
