Excerpt from Proceedings of the Provincial Court of Maryland, 1679-80/1: Court Series (14) This volume LXIX of the records of the Provincial Court, the highest common law court in the Province, begins with the Opening of a session Of the Court on October 7, 1679 and ends on February 23, 1681, at the end of a session. AS it covers a period of less than a year and a half, little change in the working of the Court is to be looked for, and little change is found. The jurisdiction of the Court remained what it had been. Cases involving more than 3000 pounds of tobacco, and criminal cases where the penalty might be the loss of life or limb had to originate there (archives III, but Since 1676 civil cases of less than 1500 pounds of tobacco had to begin in the county courts (archives II, 537; post, Cases might be appealed from the county courts, however small the issue. Bond, that no good purpose would be served by repeating it here. The jurisdiction Of the Court continued to be what it had been. All felonies punishable by loss of life or Of limb, and all civil cases involving 3000 pounds Of tobacco or more must originate there, and smaller cases could originate there if the judges wanted to consider them. Daniel Jenifer, innholder, lawyer and one - time clerk of the Court, claimed Lodowick Martin owed him 308 pounds Of tobacco, and the Provincial Court heard and decided his case.
