Book Description
Excerpt from Proceedings of the Grand Lodge of Indiana at Its Sixty-First Annual Communication, November 17 and 18, 1897 Since our last meeting, death has again invaded our ranks, and re moved from our brotherhood a true and loyal spirit in the person of Brother John Reynolds, who at the time of his death had served the Order faithfully for the period of 47 years. Following so closely upon the demise of our dearly beloved Brother, Benjamin Foster, who was his companion and friend for nearly a life time, our Order is called upon to suffer, as it were, a double bereavement, and the more keenly feels the loss thus sustained. His membership was not a mere nominal one His life was a continuous manifestation of the principles and tenets of Odd Fellowship. He was a man of a high order of intelligence and nobility of purpose. He loved his God, his family, his country and the Order with which he was so long associated, all with a devotion that found an expression in deeds that spoke more eloquently than mere words. His honesty and integrity were far above the breath of sus picion. He was a pure and just man, who had the esteem of all who knew him. For forty or more years he never' missed a session of the Grand Lodge, and was one of the best informed Odd Fellows in the State. He served the Order with a degree of interest and constancy that is worthy of our emulation. He filled every position which the jurisdiction was able to confer upon him with credit and honor. He never tired of doing good. He always had a cheerful-word for all with whom he came in contact. In af iction he bore himself with strong Christian fortitude. In adversity he was patient and undismayed. In joy and prosperity he was modest and free from arrogant assumption. He was a man among men, one who blessed and purified all around him. We shall miss him sadly. Henceforth, he will live with us only in memory. His station will be filled by others. Our Convocations will come and go perennially the same as if he had not come nor gone. But his deeds and his in uence will never die; they will prove a light to our pathway and a lamp to our feet. I recommend that suitable action be taken by this Grand Lodge commemorative of his virtues and manly principles.
